The Bear Season 5 needs to not make this same mistake that Season 4 made

Season 5 of The Bear is now in development, as Hulu has officially renewed it after the fourth season wrapped up. Nevertheless, following the end of season 4 with various unresolved character storylines, the fans and critics have noticed one critical issue that made an impact on the show's narrative. The big concern is the lack of balanced character development, which season 4 had issues with.

The show brushed off key characters, particularly Sydney, despite a heavy setup in previous episodes. Season 5 will feature heavy hitters from the show, such as Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and others.

Season 4 concluded with Carmy resolving to close down the restaurant after cementing its financial future. Despite this, reports of the new season focus on the need to rectify the imbalance in character development, especially for Sydney and other supporting characters.

Season 5 also questions Jimmy's (Oliver Platt) involvement, having cut funding on The Bear but still being connected with the Berzatto family. It has been discussed among fans that season 5's path should include team dynamics and character development over repetition of the same pattern as in season 4.

Season 4's character imbalance created major narrative gaps

The Bear season 4 featured several subplots but didn't offer regular screen time to each key character. An example was the case of Sydney's storyline. Season 4 had scenes that held promises of huge things happening for Sydney, such as her mentorship scenes and career development.

Still, these storylines remained underdeveloped at the season finale. Ebraheim and Tina, who dominated the restaurant's kitchen activities, also experienced decreased narrative attention as opposed to previous seasons. At the same time, the main narrative was centered on Carmy's personal struggles, his alienation from Claire, and his difficulties managing the restaurant.

This shift in emphasis made a number of other characters feel underutilized. Fans complained about how some characters were developed in pivotal episodes but took backstage roles in later season 4 episodes. This uneven attention threw off the harmony that earlier seasons of The Bear had sustained among the ensemble cast.

Carmy's exit might alter The Bear season 5's dynamics

Season 4's ending established a significant shift in The Bear. Carmy told Richie and Sydney that he would be moving away from the restaurant after securing its fiscal future. Deadline states that this exit is said to redefine season 5's structure. With Carmy planning to exit, the series is challenged with redistributing significance in the narrative among the characters who are still left.

Jimmy, who contributed finances to The Bear, has also withdrawn financial support but is still linked to the Berzatto clan. His future contribution is not guaranteed, although season 4 episode 9 suggested his potential interest in franchising The Beef, another restaurant in the series.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sydney will most probably play a bigger leadership role, but nothing has been confirmed by the writers. A change in leadership within the kitchen team and potential expansion of The Beef brand can change the show's central storylines by allocating more screen time to characters such as Sydney, Richie, and Tina.

Expecting better character balance in season 5

Reactions from season 4 have indicated that the audience demands a well-balanced storyline in season 5. Social media forums and comments on sites such as Reddit and Twitter frequently express discontent with unbalanced character portrayals.

Fans hope Sydney's storyline comes to a proper end, and Richie enjoys further development following his character development in previous seasons. One of the remaining unresolved subplots is Ebraheim and the back-of-house crew learning to navigate the restaurant's success after season 4's intense timeline ended.

Another is whether the team can sustain The Bear with Carmy not being directly involved in the day-to-day, and if The Beef's growth will be included in the story of the following season. Production on season 5 will begin in 2025, with release slated for 2026, according to Variety. Official cast announcements have yet to be made, though the showrunners said they would keep major ensemble members.
