Season 2 of Blue Lights portrays the gritty streets of Belfast and how the police work interacts with deeply humane and traumatic stories of corruption and resilience. As mentioned, it begins with Stevie and Grace discovering the body of a military veteran, dead from an overdose. When they start the investigation, it leads them to a loyalist pub and to Soupy's ex-army friend, Lee Thompson. The season also shows some developments in Grace and Stevie's chemistry, and Annie becomes Grace's new roommate.

Annie starts patrolling with Tommy and advises him to reconnect with Aisling Byrne, a Derry officer he had met in training. A new officer, PC Shane Bradley, joins the team, presenting himself as a model cop; however, this behaviour points towards ulterior motives.

Jen, who has left the police force after Gerry's death, begins studying to be a solicitor. She gets connected with Happy Kelly, whose father and brother were killed in the 1978 chip shop bombing. While investigating their deaths, Jen discovers that Robin Graham, the RUC officer, had prior knowledge about the bombing. Though she can’t prove it, Jen’s pursuit exposes the rot and cover-ups still festering in Northern Ireland’s justice system.

In the criminal underworld, Jim Dixon is running drugs, using his driver, Lee Thiompson. Dixie mocks Soupy's death, and Lee retaliates, which leads to a series of attacks and arsons culminating in Dixie's murder, and this makes Lee the top drug lord.

Lee consolidates power by using his taxi firm for drug transport and recruiting younger loyalists, including his 12-year-old nephew Henry, to keep his empire running.

On the other hand, Shane pushes Tommy into an unauthorized mission that leads to Tommy's brutal beating. Grace and Stevie investigate the suspicious death of a cancer patient, forcing Stevie to confront the grief of losing his wife and admit how protective he’s become of Grace.

The season then moves towards the climax and Lee's downfall, with young Henry shooting at Stevie and Grace's patrol car after playing with a loaded gun. The pair survives, but Lee shows no remorse, dragging Henry deeper into his world. He edits the video to frame the police as aggressors firing in a child's presence. Lee's sister ultimately exposes his crime and reveals his role in arson, murder and inciting hatred. She also tells Grace about his shady dealings with Canning, and this leads to the collapse of his empire, concluding the season.

By the end of season 2, we saw that Tommy and Aisling had grown closer while Annie forgave Shane. Grace and Stevie share a romantic moment, leaving the season on a hopeful but uncertain note.
