The Boys producer Eric Kripke has been openly anxious about writing the series finale to the acclaimed Prime Video show. Kripke has openly cited the pressure of coming up with an ending to the intricate and beloved show that would meet expectations, saying that great TV finales are a rare beast and that it is not easy to neatly wrap up all the loose ends.

He confirmed that the last season will give the writers freedom to off characters and wrap up storylines without having to save them for later seasons. This will include the fifth and last season, which will debut in 2026, likely consisting of significant character deaths and an apocalyptic theme as the series culminates.

Kripke has mapped out the series as a five-season arc from the beginning, and he thinks that the last season is the peak where the characters have to unite to save the world, creating a climactic finale to the series.

The challenge of crafting The Boys series finale

Eric Kripke has emphasized that there is a great deal of pressure in writing a fulfilling series finale for The Boys. On the Creator to Creator podcast, he explained how few TV shows get to wrap up well, highlighting the difficulty of fulfilling high fan expectations after four successful seasons.

The Boys' intricate story with its numerous characters and interconnected plots makes it difficult to tie everything into a bow. Kripke's concern is that he needs to give the finale justice for the story and the fans and still make it a significant conclusion.

This pressure is also heightened by the fact that the series has been commended for its extensive storytelling and surprises, heightening the stakes on the last episodes.

Creative liberty and character destiny in the last season

The reveal that season five will be the last has provided Kripke and his writers with the liberty to come up with final decisions on the characters and plotlines. Kripke said that the last season frees the writers to "waste people" in manners they previously could not, so character death and breakup of relationships are possible without fear of future seasons.

This artistic freedom translates to the show's trademark violence and surprise deaths continuing to intensify, with no assurances which characters will remain alive. Kripke has cautioned viewers that a lot of deaths are imminent in the last season, just as the show's dark theme and apocalyptic storyline would demand. This method would ensure a conclusive and dramatic conclusion to the series.

Inspirations from Classic TV finales

Kripke has indicated that he drew his inspiration from the critically acclaimed show Breaking Bad to inform how to end The Boys. Breaking Bad has a tightly coiled plot and gratifying payoff, and Kripke seeks to replicate it by seeing that there is resolution to all loose threads in the series finale.

He admires how Breaking Bad pays off each plot point in its final season and wishes that The Boys' final season could have that same level of narrative resolution. This inspiration follows Kripke's dedication to providing a good ending that is respectful of the complexity of the story and the viewer's investment.
