The Boys Season 5 is going to be an epic journey for the father-son emotional bond. It was revealed in the post-credit scene for Season 4 of the show that Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles, was still alive and kept in a medicated coma since his montage with Queen Maeve in Season 3.

Now that Homelander has found out that his father is still alive, he is bound to fall into his usual tragic quest of love for his father, and wanting to make him proud. Showrunner Eric Kripke teased the upcoming intense emotional moments between Homelander and Soldier Boy that will be explored in Season 5 in conversation with TV Insider.

Here's everything that The Boys showrunner revealed about what to expect from the final season.

One thing about Homelander from The Boys is that he just wants to be loved. In a not entirely sane and somewhat gross way, he's like most of us when it comes to the tragic quest of love. He was looking for unconditional love when he made Ryan come and stay with him. In his head, the fact that Ryan was his son (conceived as a result of se*ual assault, let's not forget), he would love Homelander unconditionally, just as a son loves his father.

However, when Ryan started to recognize his father for the monster that he is, even Ryan goes to Butcher, shattering Homelander's hopes and dreams. However, The Boys Season 4 credit scenes reveal that Homelander's father, Soldier Boy, is still alive, and he still has hope for some family in this world, as explained by showrunner Kripke:

"The thing about Homelander — and I was just talking to Antony about this yesterday — is it’s sort of tragic, actually, but ultimately, the guy just wants someone to love him. He tries amassing all of this power just so someone somewhere will love him, but they’re all scared of him because of all that power. And I think the same goes for Soldier Boy…. [Homelander] just wants a dad to love him and be proud of him."

So, now that Homelander has found out that his father, Soldier Boy, is still alive, the father-son relationship can be explored in The Boys Season 4. When Homelander found out in Season 3 that Soldier Boy was his father, there wasn't enough time to explore the relationship between them. Season 5 is giving the showrunner a chance to actually explore this relationship, and he has revealed that it has led to a lot of fraught emotional turns where the actors are playing off of each other.

"I would say, because the revelation that Soldier Boy was his father came so late in Season 3, we never really got the chance to play it, but actually playing this father-son relationship between those two characters, there’s a lot of material to mine there and a lot of fraught emotional turns. So we’re able to dig into that in Season 5, and it has been a blast watching those two actors play off each other in the dailies."

It will be extremely exciting to see how this plays out in the final season of The Boys. As of now, there is no update on when Season 5 will premiere, but we do know the show is in production at the moment, so a 2026 release can be expected.
