At the centre of The Buccaneers is the age-old conflict between modernity and tradition. Running successfully on Apple TV+, The Buccaneers first aired in 2023 as the latest on-screen adaptation of the unfinished novel by Edith Wharton. The Buccaneers follows a group of young and energetic women as they navigate love and desire against the backdrop of a conservative background. These women trace their lineage to the newly rich American elite, and the crux of the show revolves around how each of them copes with the stiff upper lip of London's social life.
Despite being based on a fond literary source, it is verily the characterizations of the show that have earned it the majority of its share of praise. From the central character of Nan St. George to her sister Jinny St. George or Conchitta, and the others, these are remarkable characters that deserve special mention. Here we take a look at the complete cast list of The Buccaneers with a short description of the actors who play them and their notable works.

1) Alisha Boe as Conchitta Closson
Actress Alisha Boe is well known for her appearances in Paranormal Activity and Do Revenge. She also played the character of Jessica Davis on 13 Reasons Why.
The character of Conchitta is brave and confident, and this was repudiated when she was pregnant with her husband's child right before their marriage. Although she was the first among her group of friends to get married on The Buccaneers, she did sustain her friendship through thick and thin.
2) Kristine Froseth as Annabelle "Nan" St. George
Froseth was seen as Ffion on Apostle. Apart from this, she has also appeared on The Society, Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, and Sharp Stick. One of her remarkable performances includes playing Alaska Young in Looking For Alaska.
Nan is one such character who didn't place much emphasis on getting married, unlike other women around her. She soon found herself in a love triangle with Theo and Guy both looking to ask for her hand in marriage.
3) Christina Hendricks as Mrs. St. George
Best known for her riveting portrayal of Joan Holloway on Mad Men, Christina Hendricks has also made her mark on The Neon Demon and Ginger & Rosa.
Mrs. St. George is the mother to both Jinny and Nan and she's the one who is the most happy to learn about her daughters' success in the marriage market on The Buccaneers.
4) Guy Remmers as Theo, the Duke of Tintagel
Remmers has just appeared on a short film called Lessons before bagging his major role on the Apple TV+ show.
Guy behaves in a particularly un-Duke fashion with Nan before asking her hand in marriage. He is also an aspiring painter.
5) Imogen Waterhouse as Jinny St. George
Waterhouse's notable projects include Nocturnal Animals, Braid, and The Outpost.
Contrary to Nan, Jinny as the elder sister, is more taciturn and reserved, and this furthers her chances to land a suitable British husband on the show.
6) Matthew Broome as Guy Thwarte
Similar to Remmers, The Buccaneers is the first time that Broome is appearing on a major show. His character of Guy is the childhood friend of Theo, and after the loss of his mother, is called upon by his father to tend to their estate. He fell in love with Nan at a party.
7) Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth
Ibrag appeared as Anna on Dive Club. Her character of Lizzy is the eldest one among the Elmsworth girls and is also a sister to Josie Totah's Mabel.
8) Josh Dylan as Richard Marable
Marable previously appeared in recurring roles on various projects such as The End of the F***ing World, Noughts + Crosses, Allied, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Marable initially is hesitant to marry Conchitta and to go against his conservative parents. However, his love for her soon triumphs over his hesitation.
9) Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth
Totah is known for her roles on Other People, Moxie, and Saved by the Bell. She is a transgender actress.
Mabel is Lizzy's younger sister and proceeds through the marriage market to land a husband.
10) Simone Kirby as Miss Laura Testvalley
Kirby has previously worked on His Dark Materials and Notes on Blindness.
Her character appears on The Buccaneers as the governess of Lord Seadown and the Marable.
11) Mia Threapleton as Honoria Marable
Threapleton's notable works include A Little Chaos and Dangerous Liaisons.
Honoria Marable is initially reserved on the show but soon blooms forth after befriending the American girls.
12) Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown
Finally, Fishwick was previously seen on Call the Midwife and Living.
Being a cold character, Lord Seadown is Dick's brother on the show and also the heir to Lord Brightlingsea.
Creator and EP open up about the show
Speaking in an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, creator Katherine Jakeways and Executive Producer Beth Willis highlighted their approach to adapting the literary source for the screen. Willis revealed:
"We actually quite consciously didn't use a copy of the book that had the ending on. We sourced, in fact, it wasn't easy to find, but we all got copies, which have Edith Wharton's synopsis at the end of them, but the book ends as she finished it, so we couldn't comment on those other editions. We haven't read them."
Jakeways further added:
"We were just about old enough to have watched the miniseries at the time, and I may have been a bit aware of it at the time when I was at university in that way that you are of things, but once we knew we were doing this and once we'd set ourselves the challenge of doing our version of it, we deliberately didn't watch the 1990s miniseries. Obviously, we've gathered things about it from things that people have said, but we haven't watched it to this day. So I suspect it's fairly different. We wanted to do our own version of it. Have you watched it?"
The Buccaneers is exclusively available on Apple TV+.
