The Buffy reboot has now confirmed a few new cast members to its lineup. Deadline reports Hulu has officially announced the names of five new series regulars to join Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the new pilot.
Faly Rakotohavana, Jack Cutmore-Scott, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, and Daniel Di Tomasso are the new additions to the cast. This is a major development in the making of the long-awaited reboot, which is being presented as the next installment of the Buffyverse.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress who portrayed Buffy Summers in the original series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, returns as an executive producer and will also return to play her character. Armstrong leads the way, playing Nova, a new vampire slayer introduced in this new story.
The casting announcement signals that production on the pilot is moving forward, with more story and character details beginning to take shape. Directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao and written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, the reboot is being developed under 20th Television and Searchlight TV.
Who’s joining the cast of the Buffy reboot?
According to Deadline, five actors have been added to the main cast of the Buffy reboot. Each of them portrays a character connected to the overarching story around Nova, the new slayer.
Faly Rakotohavana will star as Hugo, the spoiled but affable high-school student who is also a nerd. Rakotohavana has appeared in Hulu's Unprisoned and Disney+'s Secret Society of Second Born Royals.
Ava Jean will play Larkin, a student who is a "chronic do-gooder." Jean's recent credits are for a guest spot on Law & Order: SVU and a forthcoming recurring role in Angel Studios' limited musical series A Week Away.
Sarah Bock has joined the cast as Gracie, who is the leader of a group of church-going students. Bock can be seen playing Miss Huang in Season 2 of Severance on Apple TV+.
Daniel Di Tomasso has been cast as Abe, Nova's father. His character is a solo parent who is employed as a photojournalist. Di Tomasso most recently appeared in a recurring role on CSI: Vegas and on Major Crimes.
Jack Cutmore-Scott will play Mr. Burke, a beloved high-school instructor. He previously appeared as the lead in Paramount+'s Frasier revival and also had a role in Hulu's Death and Other Details. He can be seen in the feature films Oppenheimer, Tenet, and Dunkirk, all directed by Christopher Nolan.
The story and setting
In this new Buffy reboot, the tale centers around Nova, an introverted teenager at high school who is the new slayer. Deadline reports that Nova's character will drive the narrative in what is being framed as the next chapter of the Buffyverse. Gellar's return playing Buffy hints at potential overlap between the original and new series, but complete plot details remain hidden.
The pilot script is by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, both creators of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fringe. Chloé Zhao, who was behind the directing of Nomadland, will direct the pilot. The addition of the two Zuckermans and Zhao brings strong creative talent on board.
Where is the Buffy reboot being produced?
The Buffy reboot is being produced by 20th Television and Searchlight TV, both Disney-owned properties. The series will be available to stream on Disney-owned Hulu. This placed the reboot in an increasing pool of legacy reboots, most of which are finding a home on streaming.
Casting announcements and production reports have been released consistently, which means that development is well underway. The production has yet to release a date for release, but now that casting is confirmed and pilot scripting has begun, the next announcement could be coming soon.
Sarah Michelle Gellar's role
Sarah Michelle Gellar is not only executive producing the project but also reprising her original Buffy Summers role. Though the specifics of her involvement within the story have not been outlined, Deadline reported she will be back as the character she brought to iconic status.
Gellar was also reportedly hesitant about revisiting the show, but recent releases point to her cooperation and input on the reboot. Her involvement as a producer and performer indicates the reboot will have some continuity with the original show. Fans of the original might recognize familiar parts, but with new characters and universes.
