Tim Robinson's The Chair Company, since its premiere on October 12, has quietly grown to smash a five-year-long HBO record. The blend of conspiracy thriller and dark cringe comedy has managed to create an originality in the genre that audience and critics alike are finding exceptional.
It wasn't too long after the show's premiere that HBO announced that the Robinson starrer had one of the biggest comedy premieres for the streamer in more than five years. While HBO has a strong foothold in the drama genre, it has yet to find its place in the genre of comedy. So, maybe The Chair Company will mark the start of an upward trajectory for the network's comedies.

HBO announces The Chair Company as the biggest comedy debut in over 5 years
The Chair Company starring Tim Robinson as William Ronald Trosper, who works at Fisher Robay, an architectural firm that makes malls. Trosper finds himself in the middle of investigating a far-reaching conspiracy involving the manufacturer of chairs after being subject to an embarrassing incident in the workplace, aka, his chair broke in the middle of an important business presentation. His efforts to track down Tecca chairs, the company that manufactures the chair that broke down, led him to deep rabbit holes.
Starring Lake Bell as Trosper's wife, Barb, Sophia Lillis as his daughter, Natalie, and Will Price as his son, Seth, The Chair Company has a talented ensemble. The Trosper family is joined by Lou Diamond Phillips and Jim Downey as well. It appears the audience and critics are finding these performances exceptionally entertaining, as the show has had the biggest HBO debut for a comedy series in over 5 years.
Along with positive reviews and a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show debuted with almost 1.1 million viewers tuned in on the HBO cable channel and HBO Max in the first three days. The position was previously held by the two-season-long Avenue 5 for its debut in January 2020.
Since then, the network has faced difficulty in establishing a strong foothold in the comedy genre, despite the unprecedented Emmy-winning, critically acclaimed hits in drama with shows like The Last of Us, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, and Succession.
The Chair Company has been co-created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin, with whom Robinson has previously collaborated for I Think You Should Leave and Detroiters. Adam McKay and Todd Schulman join Robinson and Kanin as executive producers for HyperObject Industries. Andrew DeYoung and Igor Srubshchik, who serve as directors on the project, are also joining as executive producers.
The Chair Company has released two episodes to date, titled 'Life Goes By Too F**king Fast, It Really Does,' and 'New Blood. There's 5 Rons Now,' leading to the biggest comedy debut for the streamer, and hopefully this momentum will continue to grow as the next six episodes premiere over the next weeks till November 30.
