The Challenge Season 40 has been live on the small screens for four months now. What started with 40 strong-willed contestants is now left with only a quarter. In episode 16 of the show which aired on Dec 11, Wednesday, it was time for Cory Wharton to bid adieu to the remaining crew.
This is a reality TV competition where contestants, including newcomers and a few familiar faces from other reality shows, enter to compete in extreme mental and physical challenges. The show promises a lot of drama, interpersonal dynamics, intense competition, alliances, and betrayal. The Challenge airs on MTV and serves as a spin-off of Road Rules and The Real World.
The latest episode of this threatening show titled "Battle of the Era" threw the veterans into some extensive physical and mental challenges. By the end of the day, it was Cory Wharton who got eliminated from the show.

The Daily Challenge
The daily challenge set for this episode was multi-layered. For their first challenge, the contestants had to solve a puzzle to unlock a Burger King flame-grill convertible car. As soon as one solved the puzzle, the car went off the cliff of Vietnam, leaving behind a 500-meter swim to finish the challenge. This game was named "Fire Plunge".
Out of the final contenders, it was only Jordan Wiseley and Tory Deal who cracked it and got immunity from the elimination. They also got a cash prize from the show's sponsors, Burger King.
Elimination Round
This was when things got pretty serious last night. As the challengers moved to the elimination round, they had to collect 48 heavy cinder blocks with parts of a picture on it to form a complete image. Cory and Derek head into this round with severe determination. It was Cory's 4th elimination challenge and he didn't want to disappoint his sister, also a former finalist of The Challenge, Cheyenne.
The elimination game was called "Closing Time". Though the same sounded as easy as the childhood cinder-block puzzle, it had its own catch. The catch was that each block had pictures on both sides. Therefore the contestants had to make sure they were being strategic. Along with that, they had to ensure the giant guillotine moving up and down didn't knock the blocks down.
Cory and Derek both approached the task differently. While Cory decided to collect all the blocks first, Derek started building the image as he collected them. It was Derek's strategy that worked, leaving Cory ready to pack his bags.
Who is left on The Challenge Season 12?
As Cory gets eliminated on Dec 11, the remaining contestants to continue are Derek Chavez, Tori Deal, Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio, Jenny West, Cara Maria Sorbello, Rachel Robinson, Kyland Young, Jordan Wiseley, and Michele Fitzgerald.
As the competition gets more intense with each episode, more physically enduring and mental challenges. Also with Derek picking Cara Maria Sorbella, Rachel Robinson, and Jenny West for prospective elimination after winning the elimination round, the dynamics and alliances on the show will have an influence.
