HBO's cult comedy The Comeback, co-created by Lisa Kudrow and Michael Patrick King, is returning for its third strike in the span of two decades. The show, which originally premiered in 2005, despite being exceptional (and being nominated for an Emmy), was not renewed for another season, not until a decade later. It might be reality TV, it might be streaming, or the latest AI, Valerie Cherish continues to land at the perfect moment of tipping over. King explains in his latest conversation with Entertainment Weekly that over the years, he'd always get together with Kudrow. During those meeting, they would consider ideas for a possible new season of The Comeback. Then they decided to consider the present situation of the television business and take the interesting step of placing Valerie in that world and seeing how she deals with it:"Then we came upon the idea of looking at where the television business is right now. And it's very much like the Wild West — where it was 20 years ago with reality TV. Everybody was really concerned that reality TV was going to destroy television as we know it. Then it was streaming. And here we are now, and everybody's, maybe more than ever, in a panicked state about what's coming next: AI."While King did not reveal much about how Valerie has fared in the past ten years that the audience hasn’t seen her, he did talk about a new avenue of television. This is the space thatThe Comeback Season 3 will be exploring. He revealed that Kudrow's Valerie was actually set to take over as the lead of a brand-new sitcom, How's That?. The problem? It is a sitcom written by AI.Valerie has never been at ease with technology, and even though she tries to adapt to innovation, she's more often than not a few steps behind. So, for her to try and understand this new perception of computers that learn too fast is a challenge, especially when they are running the writing room. Per King:"What does that do to our perception of what television is and what writing is and what being an actor is? The most fun thing about Valerie in AI is all her drama has been with writers. And now what will her drama be if there are no writers?"The Comeback Season 3 is taking up an extremely interesting new direction in a currently ongoing discussion, placing one of the most human characters to deal with a machine. The Comeback Season 3 is set to premiere in March 2026.Keep reading Soap Central for more such interesting insights into upcoming shows!
