In the opening scene of The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 8, Austin and Kate are seen confused about why Trowbridge was happy about the capture of Lenkov and not with taking out a number of Russians.

Kate reveals that, according to Roylin, his issue was related to an election in Scotland, wondering if the man's arrest might somehow work in his favor. Austin tells Kate about his and Ganon's visit to Paris to talk about the arrest. Meanwhile, Stuart tells Kate at the embassy that Ganon wants her to go with Anu Kapoor instead of him and Austin.

Stuart also informs her about the meeting with the National Federation of Fishermen's Organizations. However, Stuart later confirms to Kate that she will be traveling with Austin and not Anu. Stuart thinks Kate still needs guidance for the VP role, as he admits to Eidra.

Kate tells Hal that Darya tried to reach her. Hal suggests she should ask Jill to return the call, but Kate explains that Jill is handling the Afghanistan mission and taking care of everything she was supposed to. After discussing the Paris meet, Hal tells Kate that he has been asked by Frances to come with her to the Chelsea Flower Show.

Looking unhappy, Kate asks Hal to join her on her Paris trip. However, he rejects the idea.

After being asked by Kate, Hal gives the speech at Chatham House. However, Stuard didn't look very happy with the sudden change.

A politician then comes to speak with him, named Merritt Grove. Hal later tells Kate on call that the Tory MP came to talk to him, and he plans to meet him tonight. Kate, shocked at the news, tells Hal that he actually wants to talk to a representative of the president of the US. However, Hal makes it clear that the person he met didn't want to meet Billy Appiah.

The two get into an argument, with Kate telling Hal not to meet the Grove under any circumstances. On the other side, Kate and Austin meet the Interior Minister, who opposes the Lenkov plan. While talking to Stuart afterwards, Kate tells him that her marriage is falling apart.

In The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 8, Grove is killed in a blast, leading to speculations that Margaret did it since Kate last spoke to Margaret about it.

In The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 8, Austin and Kate attend the evening party held in France, where she wore a red dress. At the party, Kate talks to Fournier and asks again about approving the Lenkov arrest. She is surprised to learn the British Special Forces plan to kill Lenkov instead, which leaves Kate shocked.

Austin asks Kate if she wants to have a champagne, to which she politely declines, saying she wants to leave. Austin, worried, also tries giving Kate her coat to keep her warm, but she refuses at first but finally agrees to take it.

Kate first questions Austin's intentions regarding Lenkov's arrest, saying he has been playing with her. Austin replies that they don't kill people, calling it absurd.

Austin, shocked at the assassination news, reveals that the assassination order can only come under the Intelligence Services, but it requires permission from him.

Austin soon starts checking his phone to see if he has received any information about the same. Kate takes his phone and tosses it to Warren. Kate tells him that:

"A dead Lenkov is only good for the people who hired him."

This leads Austin to understand that if Trowbridge is planning to kill him, it also means he hired him.
