The Diplomat season two ended in a way no one had anticipated. It ended with the death of William Rayburn, the President of the United States, after Hal Wyler told him that Grace Penn was partly responsible for the attack on the British Naval ship. The second season ended with Hal’s frantic call to Kate, telling her of Rayburn’s death, followed by him saying,

“Grace Penn is President.”

As a swarm of security personnel ran towards Grace to make sure she was safe, given the fact that she had indeed just become president.

Netflix has announced that The Diplomat season three will be released on October 16, 2025. A teaser for the upcoming season was also shared, which shows us Grace Penn as President and Kate Wyler as the Vice-President of the United States.

The Diplomat Season 3

Season three of The Diplomat puts Kate Wyler in an impossible position: She is one of the very few people who know the heinous crimes the new President was a part of. But she is also the Vice-President, a job she never wanted but is now thrust into.

Kate can choose to expose President Penn, but she would need heaps of evidence for that. Besides, since Penn knows that Kate knows, she will be tying up all loose ends, making it even harder for Kate to prove Penn guilty. The latest teaser for The Diplomat season three makes it even clearer how dire the situation is, as Kate tells Hal,

“A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed,”

Netflix has announced that season three will be released on October 16, 2025, with Bradley Whitford joining the cast as President Grace Penn’s husband, Todd Penn. About joining The Diplomat, Whitford said to Tudum by Netflix,

“I was thrilled when I heard that Debora [Cahn, creator, showrunner, and executive producer] was interested in me doing something,”

He continued,

“I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting too. It’s an amazing cast.”

The main cast returning for season three are Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, and Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.

Back when President Grace Penn was the Vice-President, she had planned the attack on the British Naval ship, hoping such a tragedy would unify Britain and hopefully put a stop to or at least cause a delay in Scotland’s plans for independence. Scotland becoming independent would've been a disaster for America because an independent Scotland would close the nuclear submarine Creegan. Creegan is the last location from which America could track if a Russian submarine was advancing towards them.

Thus, to Penn, her act is justified, as she planned the attack to make sure America was not at a disadvantage. She admitted to Kate that she did not want so many innocent people to be killed, but also said,

“I own it, and I carry it, but I will not let it tear down the president.”

Season three of The Diplomat will hopefully reveal if Penn gets exposed and faces the consequences of her actions, or if it gets buried. Todd Penn’s appearance is also going to be interesting, as his financial troubles were the reason Penn was being considered for dismissal from her Vice Presidency.

The Diplomat season three will release on October 16, 2025, and seasons one and two are streaming on Netflix.
