According to What’s on Netflix, political drama series The Diplomat will start filming its fourth season in November 2025, only a month after the third season premieres on the streamer.

The show, created by Debora Cahn, has been a critical darling since its first season dropped on Netflix in April 2023. It went on to earn three Primetime Emmy nominations, five Golden Globe nominations, and seven Critics' Choice Award nominations, with Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell's acting performances considered as the highlights.

Netflix renewed The Diplomat for a season 2, which premiered in October 2024, and before its conclusion, the streamer greenlit another season to follow another chapter in Kate and Hal Wyler's lives. Eventually, in May 2025, it was renewed for a fourth season at the annual Upfront Presentation, as per What's on Netflix.

As revealed earlier, the shoot for season 4 will reportedly begin sometime in November 2025. The outlet doesn't reveal the exact month when the crew will wrap the production, but it estimates that the filming will happen till mid-summer 2026. So, the fourth season of The Diplomat may not debut next year, but probably in 2027.

Despite the reports from What's on Netflix, the streamer hasn't revealed any details on its official platform at the time of writing this article. Until then, let's take a look at what we know about the third season.

Since the first season, Debora Cahn's The Diplomat has stood out due to its sharp wit, diplomatic jargon, and strong performances. It has led it to receive a fourth season even before the premiere of the third one.

Upon the announcement about the third season, Cahn shared a statement, sharing her excitement about bringing this captivating world back to life with her talented team. Here's what she said, according to Variety:

“After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”

The previous season ended on a climactic note of President Rayburn's (Michael McKean) sudden death, potentially at the hands of Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). It was seen as a desperate act to bring his wife, diplomat Kate Wyler's (Keri Russell) dreams of the Vice Presidency to life. However, it may be even more challenging with Grace Penn (Allison Janney) stepping in as the new president.

The recently released teaser for The Diplomat season 3 offers a look at the new cast member, the Get Out star, Bradley Whitford, who will play Grace Penn's husband, Todd. Speaking about joining the cast, he told Netflix's Tudum:

“I was thrilled when I heard that Debora [Cahn, creator, showrunner, and executive producer] was interested in me doing something. I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting, too. It’s an amazing cast.”

Besides them, The Diplomat cast will also include Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, and Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission, Stuart Hayford.

Season 3 arrives on Netflix on October 16, 2025.
