Can Étoile’s cancellation be a blessing in disguise for Gilmore Girls fans? Emmy Award-winning writer-director Amy Sherman-Palladino's latest series, Étoile, got a disappointing update from Prime Video and was canceled after one season.
While The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's creator seemed positive about her new show, it was axed by the network after just one season, much like her 2012 ballet-centered series Bunheads on ABC Family.
Palladino seemed positive and passionate about her new project, which combined her love for ballet with themes of art and identity.
While the show's cancellation is bad news, it could likely open doors to Stars Hollow and create an opportunity for the writer to work on Gilmore Girls Season 9.
More on this in our story.
Étoile’s cancellation can pave the way for Gilmore Girls Season 9
While Étoile’s cancellation was sudden and disappointing for fans, it can pave the way for Gilmore Girls Season 9. Considering that Amazon Prime Video backed away from Étoile after just one season, which was also Palladino's passion project, the writer-director could devote her creative pursuits to Gilmore Girls.
This means the writer could very well return to Stars Hollow and continue Lorelai and Rory's story after the bittersweet ending of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
While Étoile’s cancellation seemingly paves the way for Palladino to work on another Gilmore Girls revival, she has also expressed her interest in returning to her breakthrough show.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Amy Sherman-Palladino and actors Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop expressed their interest in returning to Stars Hollow and revisiting the Gilmore mother-daughter story.
Discussing her love for the show, Palladino commented:
''We never said ‘never’ because we didn’t actually intend to do the [revival] for Netflix...As you know, I love Stars Hollow. I love Lauren Graham more than life. I love Alexis, and Kelly Bishop is my ‘Contessa.’ I bow to her.''
Graham has also expressed her interest in returning to Gilmore Girls Season 9 and added that she felt A Year in the Life's ending could very well serve as the beginning to a revival series:
''I’ve never been shy to say I would welcome coming back. My armchair analysis is that…when we went back to do the Netflix [revival], it didn’t yet feel done, which is why the story ended in a way that was not done or could potentially [be a beginning].''
Gilmore Girls Season 9 can rewrite Rory's ending after A Year in the Life
While it's wishful thinking and a second revival would be miraculous, it's not impossible, and Étoile’s cancellation has seemingly opened the gate a little wider.
In addition to Amy Sherman-Palladino and the stars all willing to return, a second revival could rewrite some of the wrongs to Rory's story in A Year in the Life. While fans were excited when Netflix announced the mini-series revival in 2016, it was nothing like the OG show.
While Rory had her growing-up arc and the mother-daughter duo came closer than ever, the revival series made Rory's character seem selfish, with entitlement issues, which was unlike the original character fans fell in love with.
The unexpected pregnancy and a series of selfish decisions on Rory's part left many fans disappointed, and could likely be addressed more in-depth with a second revival. While the mini-series returned with the OG characters, A Year in the Life's conclusion did not feel like the ending the show deserved.
With a second revival, Lorelai's storyline can be given more depth, and Rory's growth could be addressed with more self-awareness.
In addition, Gilmore Girls' fandom is quite active still, and they will surely receive the revival news with enthusiasm. With Netflix's interest in reviving classic comfort shows, a return to Stars Hollow could become a possibility.
