K-dramas like The Dream Life of Mr. Kim are the perfect example of the intriguing nature of stories that reflect real life in a distinct manner. In this K-drama, the focus shifts from the younger generation. The story of the older generation comes to life. Mr. Kim Nak-su works at a prestigious firm.

His family life also seems to be quite comfortable. However, despite all of it, he is quite resentful towards the world. From the beginning of this K-drama, we see how his past has an impact on making him the way he is.


Kim Nak-su's journey from arrogance to downfall in The Dream Life of Mr. Kim Episode 1 and 2

From the beginning of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim, Nak-su’s arrogance is evident. The first episode begins with a scene from Nak-su’s childhood. During the selection of class president, Nak-su is chosen as the vice president. After he returns home to inform his mother about the good news, his brother discourages him completely.

This incident is crucial. It depicts how resentful and insecure he eventually becomes as a person. The scene cuts to the present day. His insecurity has brought forth a distinct level of arrogance in him. He constantly disrespects his wife and son. He does not wish to listen to his son’s dreams and pushes his son to follow the path he has chosen for him.

Even at his office, he is constantly condescending towards his juniors. He keeps on passing comments here and there about them being three minutes late or them grabbing coffee before entering the office. He definitely keeps his subordinates on their toes. However, his relationship with his immediate superior is also quite intriguing.

Nak-su undoubtedly admires his achievements. Yet, he is also quite insecure about it. This can be seen when his boss confronts him in the first episode of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim. He asks Nak-su about him being in his office when he is not there. Nak-su tries to evade the situation, but it does not happen. He eventually has to apologize for his actions.

While Nak-su is out with his friends, he finds out that one of his friends is earning 30 million won per month from the building that he owns. He is instantly jealous. Nak-su often ends up being jealous of others' achievements. Back at home, he tries to brag to his son about his achievements. However, his son is not happy about any of it.

The next day, yet another shock arrives for Nak-su when he finds that Jin-woo lives in a fancy neighborhood while they are on their way to golf. At the golf course, Nak-su ends up spending more money than he had expected to just to impress his colleagues. The first episode of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim ends with Nak-su getting an emergency call, setting a grim tone.

In the second episode of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim, we see a flashback scene when Nak-su first joined the company. From the beginning, he was extremely competitive. It is revealed that after getting the transfer notice, Nak-su’s friend, Tae-hwan, decided to end his life.

Though he is eventually saved, Nak-su feels a subtle sense of regret for not being able to do anything for him. As the episode progresses, Nak-su’s son arrives at the company for the interview that Nak-su wanted him to take. However, the interviewers keep on passing remarks about him not being like his father. It completely discourages him. On the other hand, Nak-su’s boss tells him to take care of Tae-hwan’s situation.

He does want things to worsen. Back at the office, Nak-su’s boss discusses Tae-hwan's replacement, and it can be understood that it could end up being Nak-su. Nak-su’s day soon gets more complicated. He finds out that there is a mistake with the reservation at the restaurant. He begins to quarrel with the person at the restaurant’s reception.

While having dinner, he asks his son about the orientation that his son refuses to join. Things get heated further when his wife tells him about taking the real estate agent exam. He is completely dissatisfied with his wife’s decision and discourages her from giving the exam. It is also revealed that it was Nak-su’s fault while making the reservation. He made the reservation at a different restaurant, and he did not want to accept his mistake.

So, he blamed the man at the reception. Soo-gyeom asks Nak-su to apologize for his mistake and gets angry when he refuses to do so. Soo-gyeom and Nak-su’s wife leave Nak-su behind to have dinner by himself. At the end of the second episode of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim, Nak-su understands his loneliness. He tries to find someone so that he can have a drink with them. Yet, nobody accepts his offer. He ultimately calls his wife. He then tells her that he will not be returning home for the night. This episode of The Dream Life of Mr. Kim ends with a melancholic note. There is a subtle indication of Nak-su’s tumultuous future.
