The Duffer Brothers have revealed new information regarding the ending of Stranger Things in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz. In this interview, the Duffer brothers revealed that they initially toyed with the idea of putting a completely happy ending for Eleven and Mike in Stranger Things. The series began way back in 2016. Stranger Things is a Netflix original series that tells the story of a group of 1980s teenagers who are confronted by strange phenomena and top-secret government experiments while trying to grow up.

Once Stranger Things ended, a considerable number of viewers expressed differing opinions about how the series should have ended. Many fans expressed their desire for Eleven and Mike to have a happy life after having faced so much throughout the seasons. According to The Duffer Brothers' previous interviews, while they did consider giving Eleven and Mike a happy conclusion, the course of the writing for Stranger Things eventually led them to provide viewers with an ending that created many new questions without providing answers to resolve them.

What did the Duffer Brothers say about the happy ending of Stranger Things?

In a recent talk, the Duffer Brothers were asked if they ever thought about an ending where Eleven and Mike lived a normal, happy life together after all the danger was gone. According to the Stranger Things Spoilers tweet on X, they said this idea was discussed, but they could not find a good way for it to fit into the story.

"We discussed, is a happy ending possible? Like a fully happy ending, where she’s married to Mike, they're living a perfectly happy life, the government has completely backed off, the lab is shut down, and the experiments are over? And we just couldn’t figure out a way for that to work."

They originally made these comments in an online talk with Josh Horowitz on YouTube.

The Duffer Brothers also confirmed in interviews that while they would have liked the ending of Eleven's story to be happy, they had fit it within both her arc and the story arc of the characters she is a part of. They had given a lot of thought to how to show the depth of what Eleven has gone through and how difficult her adjustment to a regular life will be after all of the years that have passed with her fighting for her own survival, experiencing loss, trauma, and so on. They wanted to take that into consideration while leaving the fate of Eleven open to interpretation.

Why was there no clear happy ending to Stranger Things?

When interviewed, the Duffer Brothers revealed that they had to consider what the conclusion to Stranger Things would mean for the entire group of friends. Not simply just Eleven and Mike, but the whole group. The Duffer Brothers felt that one of the key elements of the story's development was that the characters grow up together and continue to move on through adversity, and therefore provided their audience with a less-than-perfect ending for the story's characters.

At the conclusion of the series, the Duffer Brothers felt that two outcomes could potentially occur for Eleven's character. A darker, more sorrowful outcome and a more positive and hopeful one. Mike represents the positivity of the group and believes that Eleven could potentially lead a more peaceful existence elsewhere. The creators felt they could maintain a sense of mystery and, therefore, should let the viewer's imagination take them to where they think she could go.

According to Ross Duffer, there was never any scenario in which Eleven was back with the group at the end of the series, living a normal life. His explanation was that Eleven represented more than just being with people in a relaxed environment; she was also powerful within the context of the show. This leads to why there wasn't a very happy ending, and instead, an emotional reflection.

There were also interviews that stated that the Duffer brothers wanted to show the reader how the characters developed as they grew older in their stories. This reflected the way they wrote the last scene of Stranger Things, which was to be emotional rather than merely joyful.

There were mixed opinions online, and discussions about the ending show how powerful Stranger Things has been to its audience. Some people liked the idea of a very happy ending. Others liked the open ending that left room for personal interpretation. In both cases, the finale has given fans something to talk about and think about long after it was released.

Ultimately, the Duffer brothers decided to go with the conclusion that best fit the story they intended. They stated that they had thought about an extremely happy ending for Eleven and Mike; however, they could not create one that appeared to be a good fit for the characters and the fictional world they had built.
