Stranger Things Season 5 will be released soon, and while the trailer has given us a hint of what's coming, The Duffer Brothers have also been giving us hints about the upcoming season. Ross Duffer has been sharing snippets from the post-production process on Instagram, making fans even more excited for the final session.
Speaking to Variety about their future projects and Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, creators of the show, shared what the last shot of the show they filmed was and an interesting story related to it.
The last shot The Duffer Brothers filmed of Stranger Things
Stranger Things first premiered in 2016 and has released four seasons so far. The show is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, where an experimental facility's actions lead to the opening of a portal to an alternate dimension called the Upside Down. A group of children from the town, along with Eleven, a girl who escaped from the experimental facility, battles the monsters that come to Hawkins through the portal.
Season 5 of the show will portray the final battle between Vecna and the team at Hawkins, including Eleven, Will, Mike, Joyce, Jim, Dustin, Lucas, Nancy, Jonathan, Max, Steve, and Robin. Season 4 ended with the boundary between Hawkins and the Upside Down disappearing, which allowed all monsters from the alternate dimension to terrify Hawkins. The town is under military quarantine, and the whole team has to not only find Vecna, who has disappeared, but also kill him.
It is safe to say that Stranger Things Season 5 is the most anticipated season of the show, and The Duffer Brothers have revealed the last shot they filmed of the show. Surprisingly, it doesn't include any of the characters of the show.
Ross Duffer told Variety what the last shot they filmed of the show was, saying,
"We had a close-up of a lunchbox, and we could not find it for the life of us,”
Matt Duffer added to that saying,
“It’s a GI Joe lunchbox, and there’s a blinking red light,”
“But there is debate over whether it was actually [shot]. Everyone on the crew thinks we did shoot it and editorial claims we did not.”
Ross Duffer said,
“So we had to go back and shoot this close-up,”
He continued,
“That was the last shot we ever shot on ‘Stranger Things,’ a lunchbox on the floor.”
Without knowing what the initial episodes of the upcoming season look like, it is difficult to say what connection the GI Joe lunchbox might have to the show. But now that the creators have revealed this information, fans might be able to piece together an important plotline or even the ending when the initial episodes are released.
Other than the returning cast of Stranger Things, a few actors are joining the show for Season 5. The new cast for Season 5 includes Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers, Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay, and Amybeth McNulty as Vickie.
Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 will be released on November 26, 2025, Volume 2 at Christmas, and Volume 3 on New Year's Eve. The first four seasons of the show are streaming on Netflix.
