Stranger Things Season 5 has ended, yet fans cannot stop speculating about theories, including who chose the finale's iconic end-credit track, which is David Bowie's "Heroes."
The Duffer Brothers have finally revealed the name, and it is none other than fans' favorite Joe Keery, who played the role of Steve Harrington in Stranger Things.
David Bowie's "Heroes" starts playing after the end credits start rolling in Episode 8, titled "The Rightside Up," featuring the scenes from the series in an animated way.
The song was originally released in 1977. As reported by Louder Sound, David Bowie took inspiration for the song from the relationship between his producer, Tony Visconti, and Tony's girlfriend after he saw them kissing near the Berlin Wall.
The Duffer Brothers talk about the song selection in the Stranger Things Season 5 finale
Speaking of the song, Heroes, the Duffer Brothers told Tudum:
"It was actually Joe Keery who suggested that we do the Bowie version. Once Joe said that, we immediately knew that was the right song to end the show on because it is, in some ways, an anthem for Stranger Things. To use the original Bowie version just felt fitting for the conclusion."
While fans are loving the song the creators chose for the end credit scenes, many fans suggested they could have used Djo's famous track "End of Beginning," since he has been part of the main cast from the start. Djo is Joe Keery's alter ego.
The show also comes full circle in the finale, with a new group of kids playing D&D in Mike's basement, just like in Season 1 when the series started.
In a nice twist, Joe himself picked the song, giving the finale a connection to the start of the show.
After its release, Heroes saw a big rise in listeners, thanks to the fanbase of the show. Along with David Bowie, the finale also featured two songs by Prince titled When Doves Cry and Purple Rain.
Speaking of the song choice, the Duffer Brothers told Tudum:
"Once we came up with the idea that the record was going to be the trigger for the bomb, we knew we needed an epic needle drop, and so many ideas were thrown around. I think there’s nothing really more epic than Prince."
Ross Duffer added:
"We never talked about a song choice as much as we did for that moment. What is also very exciting about it is that it just has not been used. [Prince’s] estate does not generally allow that song to be licensed outside the Purple Rain movie."
At first, the creators were unsure if they would get the rights to use the Prince song, as they were told there was only a slim chance of getting the rights. However, they finally received approval, and the song was cleared for use in the show.
The creators thanked Kate Bush, because of whom they were able to use the Prince song. Another fan-favorite song from Stranger Things is Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill, which is closely linked to Max, as Lucas uses it to help her escape the red void. In Stranger Things Season 5, Lucas is seen repeatedly playing the song to help Max fight and escape the same situation.
