Stranger Things will be wrapping up the decade-long journey in the small town of Hawkins by the end of this year, and we'll finally be forced to say goodbye to Eleven and her friends. One would think that fans would have a little bit of reprieve from this painful goodbye, owing to the spin-off that was previously announced, but the Duffer brothers have revealed that this won't be the case.

According to the Duffer brothers, while the spin-off will have some threads of connectivity with the world of Stranger Things, it won't in any form be a continual exploration of the same world.

Keep reading to find out why the Duffer brothers have made this definitive statement about the spin-off.

A Stranger Things spin-off was first announced in the summer of 2022, but no details were revealed about it at the time. Now that the Duffer brothers are closer than ever to wrapping up the story of the Upside Down and Hawkins, they are a bit more forthcoming about the rumored spin-off.

In a recent conversation with Variety, the brothers talk about their idea of a spin-off being completely different than something in the world of Star Wars or Star Trek. They reveal that the spin-off to Stranger Things will actually not be in the same world as the show. In the final season of the show, they're going to leave no stone unturned, and everything from the Upside Down to the mindflayer, Vecna, and Eleven will be done in the show itself.

“They’re going to live in a bit of a different world. There’s going to be connective tissue, but you’re almost anthologizing in a way. Because we’re not ‘Star Wars.’ We can’t be like, ‘Oh, now we’re on this planet.’”
"We do every last remaining thing we wanted to do with the Demogorgons and Mind Flayer and Vecna and the Upside Down and Hawkins and these characters,” Matt Duffer said. “This is a complete story. It’s done."

They are not looking to create or explore a larger narrative set in the same world in this spin-off. For them, there will be threads of connectivity between the Netflix blockbuster and the spin-off in the form of the storytelling style and its brand. However, the world that this spin-off would exist in would be completely separate in its own thread.

They reveal that the reasoning behind this decision for them is to avoid the "insanely convoluted mythology". They do not want to impose restrictions on their storytelling, something which is sure to happen if they're boxed in a pre-existing world for a new show with new characters and a clean slate.

"You’re starting with new characters — it’s like clean slate. You’re not tied up into any knots. There’s something refreshing about it. The hope is you’re not just doing something to just do it. And Netflix has been surprisingly patient, although I think now, I feel that patience wearing thin a little bit with the show coming to an end. But they’re understanding."

There are no official updates on the spin-off in terms of title, plot, or characters, but the Duffer brothers are set to be "heavily creatively involved" without actually shepherding the entire thing as showrunners, as they did for Stranger Things.
