The Upside Down is not going anywhere, at least not from the life of the Duffer Brothers. With Stranger Things on the verge of its final massive season being released, Matt and Ross Duffer are already giving hints of their next move. In their latest interview with Deadline, the Duffer Brothers disclosed that they have finally brought their new idea of a Stranger Things spinoff to Netflix and that fans should expect something new yet still familiar.

The Duffer Brothers are not interested in continuing the story with the Hawkins gang, instead, they want to develop a brand-new adventure with new characters. Nevertheless, the show will retain the eerie, heartwarming tone ST is known for. The Duffers are not rushing into a spin-off, but they have a huge deal with Paramount in the pipeline and their creative engine is already in full gear, so they smartly realize that they should make a spin-off, an independent one, rather than a spin-off relying on the success of the original series.

In a conversation with Deadline, Matt Duffer stated:

“We are moving forward with it. Netflix, they finally know what it is. We held it. They were so frustrated. We just would not tell them. Finn [Wolfhard] guessed what it was. So he was the only one who knew…..now everybody at Netflix knows. They’re very excited behind it there. I’m really excited about the team we’ve assembled that I can’t talk about without potentially getting into trouble, but we’ll put out more information soon. We’re trying to get it to go pretty quickly. So hopefully it’s gonna happen soon.”

The Stranger Things spinoff would be a fresh world with new characters

When Duffer Brothers discussed their new spinoff Stranger Things series, they made a very clear point: it is not another story about Hawkins. What they would like to retain is the old experience: the nostalgia, the amusement, the scares, and the sense of emotional coziness that initially made viewers fall in love with the show in the first place. Matt Duffer explained to Deadline:

“We’re not super subtle about what our influences are, but at the end of the day, at a certain point, we weren’t thinking about those stories at all. The story of Hawkins and these characters were defining this, and it is, though inspired by what came before it, original IP. I wish more people and studios were getting behind that. They mine IP that means absolutely nothing. So why not just take inspiration from what came before you and look at what worked and try to bring that into the marketplace?”

He further has stated that there will be very few minor links to the original show, but the new series will be largely independent of it. It will feature new characters, a new world and a completely new direction, basically a clean sheet to more sci-fi and fantasy tales.

Netflix, Paramount, and creative control

It is all so exciting: although the Duffer Brothers keep an active Stranger Things agreement with Netflix, they also have a four-year exclusive contract with Paramount to pursue more innovative ventures. Despite this new collaboration, they are remaining highly engaged in the Stranger Things spin-off.

They clarified that they were doing the spin-off with passion, and not merely because they must. Matt even mentioned that they were so protective of the idea that they did not want to spill the beans too soon. Matt Duffer told Deadline:

“The spinoff idea is something that Ross and I came up with that we’re extremely excited about. It’s quite different, though, than Stranger Things. So I think the key is that it’s coming from a place of passion, whether it’s from us or from somebody else. It’s not an assignment. It’s not forced like that. You’ve just seen that too many times….I want, if something’s coming out with a Stranger Things title on it, it’s good, it’s quality. So Ross and I are going to remain very, very involved, even though we’re going to be at Paramount. In fact, we’re busy working on the spin off idea right now…..We want to be intentional and very careful in terms of how we expand, in that we’re not doing anything for the sake of doing it, for the sake of putting more Stranger Things out into the world. It has to be something that we’re extremely excited about.”

The Duffers are preoccupied with maintaining the quality despite the involvement of big studios and new deals being made. They do not wish to dilute the name of Stranger Things only to make a quick payoff, they would also like the spin-off to be equally powerful and unique.

Moving beyond the usual ’80s nostalgia

Matt and Ross point out that this new spin-off is a result of actual excitement and not pressure. They do not want Stranger Things to be repeated and lose its charm. Instead, they wish each new project bearing the "Stranger Things" name to be special and worthy of being created. Ross even said that they are technically over with the nostalgia of the 80s, so it will not be another retro fling.

“Whatever we do next, I’ll tell you this, it’s not going to be set in the ’80s. I think we’re done with the ’80s.”

Ross said in the Deadline interview.

Another spin-off, the animated Stranger Things: Tales From 85, is also something fans have to look forward to. It is based on Hawkins in a fun cartoon mood and this makes it feel refreshing even as we are exposed to old locations. Therefore, whether you enjoy the old thrills or you want to be intrigued by new mysteries, the Duffer Brothers are attempting to make something that everyone will like, yet in their own creative style.
