Netflix's upcoming docuseries The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies will delve into some of the devastating incidents that shook the community and left the survivors with scars that go beyond physical pain. The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies is set to premiere on August 15, 2025.

Directed by Jo Seong-hyeon, this upcoming docuseries will serve as the second season of the viral documentary In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal, which dropped in 2023.

Through rare archival footage, reports, and most importantly, survivors' statements, season 1 exposed the abuse of religious cult leaders like JMS or Jung Myung-seok. But this time, the scope is wider and the scars run deeper.

The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies will not only explore the JMS incident but also explore cases, including the Ji Jon Pa serial killings, the Sampoong Department store collapse, and the Busan Welfare Centre.

The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies will give us a detailed look into four tragedies that completely shook South Korea. Through rare footage, photographs, survivors' records, and personal accounts, this docuseries will also highlight the corruption within the systems that allowed these tragedies to unfold

Among the cases explored are:

JMS scandal (Jung Myung-seok): The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies will continue to highlight the JMS scandal involving Jung Myung-seok, the religious head of the Providence movement, who was convicted of rape and sentenced to ten years in jail. He was again indicted in 2022 for raping two female followers.

The trailer reveals that after Maple shared her side of the incident in Season 1, twenty-one survivors came forward to sue Jung Myung-seok. As one survivor revealed,

"The first time I was assaulted, I remember I was in eighth grade."

The docuseries' producer also shared that there's a section in the police department (JMS followers) called Sasabu, who aids Jung Myung-seok and safeguards him.

Busan Brother Welfare: Also called Korea's Auschwitz, this incident will take the viewers back to the 1980s Busan, where an internment camp was built to keep thousands of poor people, including homeless children and those who opposed the government, crammed together in unsanitary conditions and deprived of basic human rights.

Busan Brother Welfare turned out to be a house of nightmares. It was only after a long fight that the authorities in 2022 released reports and recognized it as a grave human rights violation by the state.

Ji Jon Pa's serial killings: The Ji Jeon gang was formed in 1993 and consisted of seven young boys, all in their twenties. Even though the reason for such random killings is unknown, they targeted the Hyundai Department Store's guests. They used a special guidebook to aid their killings. They killed five victims in total and were finally captured in September 1994.

What was more peculiar was that none of the murderers showed any sign of remorse. What led them to such extremity? To know more, watch The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies.

Sampoong Department Store collapse: One of South Korea's deadliest structural disasters, the result of greed, corruption, and regulatory failure. In June 1995, the Sampoong store in Seocho district in Seoul collapsed and killed over 502 people, leaving several injured.
