The Eternaut on Netflix is a Spanish-language drama that cleverly blends elements of science fiction and mystery. The Eternaut revolves around the strange case of Buenos Aires being gripped by a menacing snowfall that renders dead everything it descends upon. While the initial shock of The Eternaut subsided after the citizens of the town were familiarized with the snow, the character of Juan Salvo somehow managed to survive the snowfall as he was playing cards at his friend Alfredo Favalli's house.
Towards the end of The Eternaut, humans are seen working in conjunction with the beasts, and this casts doubt on their intentions, especially those of the military. Here's everything that we know.
What is The Eternaut all about?
The official Netflix synopsis describes the show as:
"One summer’s night in Buenos Aires, a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. Juan Salvo and his friends embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth. The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own."
The show is adapted from the famous Argentinian science fiction graphic novel of the same name, written by Héctor G. Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano Lopez.
The Eternaut ending explained
Towards the end of The Eternaut on Netflix, the soldier Moro is seen entering the aliens' lair, giving birth to suspicions about the role of the military in containing the disaster. The remaining survivors are soon gathered and shipped off to the Campo de Mayo base, where feverish attempts are underway to fight the invading forces.
When the commander of the camp comes up with a seemingly perilous mission to send out hope in the form of a radio signal from the worst-affected areas downtown, Juan Salvo and his friend Favalli enlist themselves despite being reluctant to do so. Alongside them were the characters of Omar, Pablo, Igna, and Lucas.
While the mission to broadcast ended up being successful, the group had to contend with major reversals as Inga and Pablo were soon separated from the rest of the group on The Eternaut. They are then handed down the shocking revelation that the survivors and the soldiers have gone over to the side of the alien beasts. Juan turns around and attempts to return downtown, meeting the train engineer. Together, they visit the stadium only to find it eerily lit up all around in blue.
Towards the ending moments of the show, Juan and the other survivors are left to wonder about the true identity of the invading aliens and whether their designs are to enslave the entire world. Favalli had previously conjectured in this direction, and the beetle-beasts appear to be brainwashed and are being controlled by something far more sinister.
The Eternaut is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
