BBC Two's The Fall is a British thriller that runs for three series (British word for "seasons"). The BBC thriller aired on the British network between May 2013 and October 2016. The first series aired in May 2013, series 2 in November 2014, and series 3 was released in September 2016, with the finale airing on 28 October 2016.
The series 2 Episode 1 begins where the series 1 finale concluded, with the case unfinished as Paul Spector fled Belfast to a remote location in Scotland. Despite the gap between the series 1 finale and the series 2 premiere canonically, only ten days have passed between the antagonist Paul Peter Spector leaving Belfast and series 2 Episode 1. The synopsis for the series 2 premiere reads:
"Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan return in the highly anticipated second series of The Fall. DSI Stella Gibson continues her challenging hunt for Paul Spector, the killer who hides in plain sight."
The Fall Season 2 Episode 1 recap:
As mentioned before, The Fall Series 2 starts just days after the series 1 finale that saw the central antagonist Paul Spector leave Belfast, meaning the case remained unsolved. In this episode, Stella Gibson, who is investigating the serial killer (who is none other than Spector), is trying to help Annie Brawley, who is Paul's only surviving victim, remember her attacker.
As that happens, Paul's wife, Sally, leaves him in Scotland as she buys into the lie that he was having an affair with their children's babysitter, Katie. Sally returns to Belfast and learns from Katie that there might be more to their story than what Paul confessed. Her irate phone call is what prompts Spector to return to Belfast via a boat first and a train later.
On the train ride, he also chats up with a blonde woman, whom the viewer is initially led to believe is a potential victim. Meanwhile, Stella and her team are close to figuring out Paul's identity as they are due to interview Rose Stagg the next day. Rose suspects that her violent ex-romantic partner, Peter (none other than Paul Spector himself), might be the serial killer.
In the closing minutes of the episode, Paul is lurking in his serial killer mode again. The scene builds up to tension, with viewers led to believe that his potential victim is the blonde woman from the train. But that woman was a red herring, as we learn that his victim is none other than Rose herself, bringing the episode to a close.
What is The Fall Series 2 about?
Series 2 is a continuation of Series 1 as Stella Gibson tries to identify and bring the serial killer down. Meanwhile, we are given a peek into the serial killer as Paul is a charming family man who seems to love his wife and daughter. But he is also hiding his darker side. The official synopsis for the second series reads:
"The suspense mounts in the second series as the hunt for Spector continues. He becomes increasingly desperate as the net tightens around him and becomes psychologically ever more dangerous."
While The Fall concluded with Series 3, creator Allan Cubitt had expressed to revisit Stella after finally bringing down Spector. But as of now, a fourth series has not been officially greenlit.
