Alien: Earth is gearing up for its impending release on August 12 this year. Ahead of its release, Alien: Earth dropped its first full trailer for the series, and it's quite a lot to take in. From superbly establishing the premise of the upcoming show as a prequel to the original Alien movie, the trailer for Alien: Earth provides several intriguing hints of what to expect from the show.
Although the Alien franchise has sprawled into multiple film entries over the years, this is the first time that the IP is being utilized for a series. Here's everything that you need to know.
What's the latest buzz about the Alien: Earth trailer?
The recently released trailer for Alien: Earth wastes no time in establishing the central premise of the upcoming show, i.e. spacecraft crashing into Earth heralds the arrival of the dreaded Alien xenomorph to the planet. As the crash is further explored, one character is heard saying:
"This ship collected five different life forms from the darkest corners of the universe. Monsters … Invasive species. Predatory."
From all that happens on the trailer, it's fair to speculate that the upcoming show might feature new monsters alongside the familiar ones from the franchise. At one point in the trailer, a persistent clicking is heard. This further leads us to speculate about the creature from the Predator franchise, which has crossed paths with Alien before, and might be speculated to feature on the upcoming show.
What is Alien: Earth all about?
The upcoming show is set just two years before the events of the original Alien movie, and as per showrunner Noah Hawley's assertion, will feel like watching the original film for the first time. Its official description reads:
"In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold. In this Corporate Era, cyborgs (humans with both biological and artificial parts) and synthetics (humanoid robots with artificial intelligence) exist alongside humans. But the game is changed when the wunderkind Founder and CEO of Prodigy Corporation unlocks a new technological advancement: hybrids (humanoid robots infused with human consciousness). The first hybrid prototype named ‘Wendy’ (Sydney Chandler) marks a new dawn in the race for immortality. After Weyland-Yutani’s spaceship collides into Prodigy City, Wendy and the other hybrids encounter mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined."
Noah Hawley opens up about Alien: Earth
Hawley has been responsible for creating the Fargo series based on the original film of the same name by the Coen brothers. Speaking in an interview with AV Club, Hawley opened up about the upcoming show and his creative process. When asked about the decision to develop the show as a prequel to the original Alien, Hawley explained:
"Yeah, after seven Alien movies now, it’s kind of a busy highway on some level, timeline-wise. It felt like the way to give myself the most leeway as a storyteller was to take myself out of the traffic and put myself in a standalone place in which I could explore the mythology of Earth and humanity in this franchise. That aspect has been underserved in the films, with questions like “What’s the government on Earth like?” and “Do we get along or have we solved our problems?” We know various corporations have succeeded, but that standalone spot allowed me to tell my story."
Alien: Earth premieres on August 12 on FX.
