The Four Seasons, a new miniseries, was just released on Netflix on 1st May 2025. Inspired by the 1981 film by Alan Alda, the miniseries has eight episodes that portray the theme of long-term friendship and aging romance.

At the centre of The Four Seasons show are three couples who take trips together once every season. What begins as a happy tradition soon unravels, forcing everyone involved to take a closer look at their relationships.

The first trip of The Four Seasons, in spring, kicks off as planned, until Nick (played by Steve Carell) shocks the group by announcing he’s leaving his wife. What follows is a series of reactions that have their effect across the year, from awkward summer gatherings to cold winter getaways.

Who plays which character in The Four Seasons?

Created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield, The Four Seasons follows the premise of the original movie but makes changes in the dialogue and characters for today’s audience. The show can be called a comedy, but it also addresses the pain and confusion that come with growing older, growing apart, and sometimes growing up, even at an older age. The show serves as a metaphor for the idea of seasonal change, both literal and emotional.

Steve Carell plays Nick Callan, a high-strung but likable man who decides, out of nowhere, to leave his wife Anne. Carell brings his signature blend of dry humor and quiet melancholy to the role, making Nick a character you both relate to yet aren’t a complete fan of.

Kerri Kenney-Silver plays Anne, a woman who thought she knew what her life would look like and suddenly has to rebuild everything. Her portrayal of Anne is moving and raw. Kenney-Silver carries both Anne’s humor and pain in a way that makes you feel bad for her, but also proud.

Tina Fey stars as Kate Burroughs, the self-assigned group planner and the one who holds everyone together. Her husband, Jack, played by Will Forte, is cheerful and good-natured, sometimes to the point of being oblivious, but his heart is always in the right place. Their marriage is still intact, but they have their issues, some worked on, some not.

Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani play Danny and Claude in The Four Seasons. Danny is the heart of the group, warm, witty, and deeply observant. Claude is the more reserved half of the pair, someone who listens more than he speaks but has a knack for delivering unexpected truths. Their stability offers a contrast to the chaotic environment around them, although they navigate through their own relationship problems throughout the show.

Erika Henningsen plays Ginny, Nick’s girlfriend after the divorce. There isn’t anything ‘wrong’ with her, but the group does not like her too much initially. This is because she is younger, they feel Anne was wronged, and Nick is changing for his young girlfriend.

Ginny does challenge the others to think about why they keep doing things the way they always have, which becomes a turning point in the show. Besides, she is not the typical ‘young girlfriend to older man’. As Erika Henningsen said to Tudum by Netflix,

‘’The archetype of being the younger woman can sometimes be through the filter of, she’s the Instagram model always in a really sexy outfit. First off, that’s just not interesting. There are many great relationships that have an age difference where it is not [solely] about the sexual attraction.
What was so important to me was that Ginny feels like she’s on the same level as Nick. It was less about, “She’s got to be young and hot.” She has to provide something for Nick beyond just the adventure of youth. Where that landed was being able to talk to him about problems he’s having with his child, with his friends, his ex-wife, in a way that is full of empathy and fact. It was always trying to calibrate, when does the youthful exuberance come out and when does the adult who has a mindful meditation app on her phone come out?’’

The Four Seasons has a small cameo from Alan Alda himself as Don, Anne’s father, paying homage to the original film without leaning heavily on nostalgia.

The Four Seasons is a thoughtful comedy that isn’t afraid to dig into discomfort. With a talented ensemble and a witty script, it reminds us that change is inevitable, but growth is a choice.

The Four Seasons is streaming only on Netflix.
