The Four Seasons is about a close-knit group of longtime friends — Kate, Jack, Nick, Danny, Anne, and Claude — that takes seasonal getaways together. It is a tradition they follow.

With each trip, old tensions bubble up and relationships start to shift in ways none of them saw coming. Season 1 kicks off with Nick announcing he wants to divorce Anne and the whole circle goes into emotional damage control. They are heartbroken for Anne but also confused by Nick.

Meanwhile, Kate and Jack’s marriage is going through rough patches too, and, by the finale, they are headed for couples therapy. Nick’s new romance with Ginny only adds more fuel to the fire. Especially when his daughter rejects the idea of her dad moving on. All of that is just painfully real.

Then there’s Claude who is played by Marco Calvani in The Four Seasons. He is sort of the heart of the group. Claude is fiercely loyal and doting to the point of obsession when it comes to his husband Danny’s health (Danny, of course, is too busy overworking himself to notice).

Calvani is an Italian director, playwright, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He brings a beautifully grounded complexity to the role.

In a recent interview with Variety, Calvani talked about how Tina Fey’s real life shaped some of the core themes, and even teased what might happen in Season 2.

The Four Seasons: Marco Calvani on Claude, Tina Fey, and what Season 2 might bring

Marco Calvani spoke to Variety about everything from stepping into the emotional core of The Four Seasons to the real life inspiration behind the show’s most heartfelt dynamics.

For Calvani, this role was personal. He shared:

The Four Seasons has allowed me to express myself in a totally new way.”

Claude brings a calm and nurturing energy to a show where relationships are constantly on the verge of falling apart. And according to Calvani, Season 2 might just explore that aspect more deeply. He said,

"Well, it would be fun to see Danny and Claude’s group of gay friends. But you know, the group will be dealing with a baby now. I have a feeling Claude will confront his desire for a family. It would also be cool to have some scenes with Ginny (Erika Henningsen). We’re a bit of the outsiders in the group."

Calvani shared about his on screen marriage with Colman Domingo in The Four Seasons and how they portray Danny and Claude’s open marriage:

"We’re depicting an open relationship where that fact is not the conflict of their story [Calvani throws his hands up in gratitude]. It’s not a central problem; that’s kind of beautiful."

Calvani also shared how people have been stopping him on the street or messaging him online, telling him how much they connect with Claude. He said:

"He’s not just all exuberance and loudness and love, he’s also full of forgiveness. He’s not someone who holds a grudge. Some may think that’s superficiality, but he’s going to have less lines on his forehead."

Calvani touched on the importance of having a gay, interracial couple in a group of mostly straight friends, and how that inclusion was very intentional on Tina Fey’s part. He said:

"She wanted to adapt the original “Four Season” and include a gay couple, because she wanted this project to reflect her real life. She has a lot of gay friends. And adding the interracial element to this couple, it’s had beautiful impact. I owe a lot of my performance from the authenticity of my life as a gay man, to my relationship with my husband and my friends."

Well, it shows and it surely shines through in The Four Seasons.
