In The Gilded Age Season 3, power is no longer a quiet currency—it's a weapon, and in Episode 6, it's precision and consequence. The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6, titled If You Want to Cook an Omelette, dropped on Sunday, July 27, 2025, on HBO and Max.

Previously on The Gilded Age Season 3, we saw how Gladys was struggling to adjust to her new life in Sidmouth Castle, especially with Lady Sarah's strict surveillance. Nonetheless, when she wrote to her parents in New York, George charged Bertha, as he disapproved of the match from the beginning. His wife, Bertha, was blinded by ambition and power. Even though Bertha assured him that she was going to take care of the situation, George dropped an ultimatum.

In the latest episode, Bertha Russell finally confronts the reality of the life she forced her daughter into. Elsewhere, George's empire teeters on the brink thanks to one well-placed leak. Marian discovers that love, even when it looks promising, sometimes comes with a lie. And Oscar, after choosing forgiveness over fury, is blindsided by one of the show's most jarring cliffhangers yet.

Here's what happened in the latest episode of The Gilded Age Season 3.

Episode 6 of The Gilded Age Season 3 opens with Hector, Lady Sarah, and Gladys welcoming Bertha to Sidmouth Castle. The clashing power dynamics between Lady Sarah and Bertha are quite evident from the first scene. Lady Sarah offers the king's room for Bertha to rest. Quite normal, right? Until she informs her that it belonged to King William IV, whose death was rather sad.

After a heartfelt chat with Gladys, Bertha finally comes to her defense. She advises Gladys,

"Make sure he (Hector) remembers your role in his family's redemption and act accordingly. If you want to cook an omlette you have to learn to break a few eggs"

She carefully sizes up her daughter's enemy—Lady Sarah, the controlling sister-in-law—and launches a quiet war. Bertha strategizes and empowers Gladys to take control, not with rebellion but with poise and precision. The message is clear: If you can't remove the obstacle, make yourself impossible to replace.

By the time Bertha departs, Sarah's influence is cracked, and Hector sees Gladys in a new light. The duchess has learned to play the long game—and she's just getting started.

While Bertha handles the family, George is chasing dominance over the Illinois Central Railroad. With the Merrick brothers on his side, he looks poised to outsmart Sage. But Sage has other choices. He brings Clay—George's ex-secretary—with a loaded arsenal of secrets.

Soon enough, the press catches wind of George's financial cracks. His company's value nosedives. The Merricks walk away. The deal collapses. But George doesn't fold. He'd rather lose it all than give Sage the win. It's a bold stand—but one that might ruin him financially.

Marian ends her engagement without a word

For a moment, it looked like Marian and Larry had found happiness. But one small lie tears it apart. Marian suspects something when Oscar informs her about Maud Beaton. Her suspicion rises when Jack fails to give her proper answers about where Larry and he were the night before he left.

During dinner, when Marian found out that Maud Beaton was working at a club, she charged Oscar to tell the truth about Larry's whereabouts. She asked,

"Please tell me where Larry was the night he saw Maud Beaton."

When Oscar spilled out the details, Marian questioned him,

"What was Larry Russell doing at that kind of establishment?"

Marian was furious, and she slammed the door in Oscar's face as he tried to explain that Larry meant no harm.

A letter ends their engagement before Larry can defend himself. By the time he returns from Morenci with a major discovery in the mines, Marian is gone along with the future they might have had.

The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6: Jack bids farewell to the Van Rhijn household, and Ada breaks free

The Van Rhijn house is quieter, but not for long. Ada finally sees through Madam Dashkova's scam after a careless slip about Luke's name. It's a harsh moment, but one that frees her from manipulation.

Meanwhile, Jack's secret fortune becomes public, thanks to the kitchen slip and Armstrong's loud mouth. With $300,000 from his invention, he is no longer suited to be a footman. Ada encourages him to leave. He does—tearfully and generously—repaying friends and gifting fellow servants.

The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 6 recap: What happened to John Adams?

Oscar confronts Maud Beaton, the woman who conned him out of the Van Rhijn fortune. What he finds isn't vengeance—it's pity. Maud is broken and broke. Her partner Crowther stole the money and left her in the gutter to rot.

Oscar forgives her, and for once, he chooses compassion over revenge. Oscar helps Maud Beaton with a ticket to Sandusky and $100.

Then comes the blow: as he and John Adams finally begin to connect, John is struck by a carriage in the street. The episode ends in horror. Just as Oscar starts to evolve, fear tears the ground from beneath him.

The Gilded Age Season 3 continues to prove that wealth doesn't protect from pain. Power shifts, lies break hearts, and redemption comes with a price.
