Episode 5 of The Gilded Age Season 3, titled A Different World, dropped on Sunday, July 20, 2025. The episode stripped away the facade of grandeur to unravel the bitter truths of society.
Gladys, now the Duchess of Buckingham, found herself suffocated in the Sidmouth castle, under the cold thumb of Lady Sarah. Humiliated and isolated, she wrote home, desperate for escape.
Back in New York, George Russell faced brutal failures in business. His empire, built on steel and willpower, is now tottering, and pressure spilled into his marriage. He lashed out at Bertha after a field dinner with Alfred Merrick, accusing her of overstepping and undermining him.
When George received Gladys' letter, he lashed out at Bertha for arranging the marriage between the Duke and Gladys, just to climb the social ladder. Even though Bertha promised to fix her mistake, George warned her he may not be around when she returns.
Meanwhile, Larry Russell, after promising to go to Arizona to secure her father's business deals, proposed to Marian Brook. She said yes, but his bachelor night at The Haymarket revealed a secret that could derail them before the wedding even begins. At the club, Larry spotted Maude Beaton- Oscar's infamous ex, fallen from grace, and with a new alias.
Meanwhile, Peggy Scott continues to stand her ground. She encounters her old flame, T. Thomas Fortune, at a baseball game, who not only appreciates her work but also arranges a high-level meeting with a suffragist. While she was about to board the train to Philadelphia, Mr. Fortune arrived and insisted on traveling with her.
However, Peggy stood her ground and said it was her assignment and she would like to go alone. After a brief altercation with a jealous Dr. Kirkland, Mr. Fortune finally left, and Peggy boarded the train alone.
