The Gilded Age, up until the latest episode, was a period drama with intricate storylines following its characters through societal expectations in intricate sets, costumes, and background scores. Nobody would open the door of their house and expect to be shot, especially not in this period drama. However, that is exactly what happens in the penultimate episode of Season 3.
The HBO period drama took an extremely abrupt turn to the left in the latest episode when George Russell, played by Morgan Spector, answered the door of his home, just to be shot by a courier in close vicinity. No one would expect such a thing to happen on The Gilded Age, but it appears this is exactly why Spector was thrilled when he found out the developments in the third season.
Keep reading to find out why Morgan Spector was delighted, according to his conversation with TVLine, to find out that his character, George Russell, would be shot at in the second-to-last episode, making for a devastating cliffhanger in the finale.
Morgan Spector was happy to find out that his character would be shot and might die in The Gilded Age
The next week's finale for The Gilded Age Season 3 just turned into a must-watch after that explosive cliffhanger of an ending. After John died in the previous episodes, nobody saw this coming, and the creators managed to use this exact benefit of mystery and delivered the most surprising twist of all time.

In the final moments of the semi-final episode, George opens his door to a messenger who addresses him, pulls out a gun to shoot Jones in the crowd, and then shoots a bullet towards George. The screen blacks out while the bullet moves in slow motion towards George. Spector addressed the shocking moment and revealed that he was actually thrilled when he read the scripts for the episode.
"Those final scripts were a little delayed, so it took some time before I got them. But when I read the ending for that episode, I was just thrilled, because it’s such a left turn for our show. "
He goes on to explain that the first reason he was "thrilled" is that the twist, even though surprising, is completely historically accurate. Several high-profile deaths were reported in this age, owing to close-proximity shootouts. Additionally, he added that the show has always attempted to present history in a way that is relevant to contemporary society. Therefore, a money and power-hungry industrialist being shot at, for unrevealed reasons, apart from being historically accurate, is also contemporarily accurate.
"It’s totally historically accurate. This kind of thing happened during that era, but it doesn’t feel like ‘The Gilded Age.”
Nevertheless, however historically accurate the shooting was, it was very out of place for The Gilded Age. The unexpectedness of this action is another reason why Spector was impressed by the scripts. The show was not renewed for another season when this twist was in production. Therefore, the cliffhanger could be the show's attempt at ensuring a Season 4 renewal, something it has already been rewarded with now.
“just didn’t feel like the kind of thing that would happen on The Gilded Age. I’m thrilled the more we get to expand the world."
Only time will tell if George survives this in The Gilded Age, but Spector did point out that he was yet to sign a contract for Season 4. So, anything could happen in this season finale.
