The Girlfriend Episode 3 recap: Laura tells the biggest lie

In Episode 3 of The Girlfriend, Laura and Cherry’s battle for Daniel’s affection intensifies.

Although Laura approves of the apartment Cherry shows to Daniel, she becomes concerned about Daniel living there alone. That is when her son reveals that he will be living there with Cherry.

Laura, being over obsessed, tries to dig into Cherry's past and meets Nicholas and Millie, who once accused Cherry of her unstable behaviour. Daniel becomes angry about this and decides to spend his birthday with Cherry, rather than his mother, breaking their tradition.

Laura then seeks solace in her former lover, Lilith, but a devastating call about Daniel meeting with an accident rips away her and Cherry's lives in The Girlfriend episode 3.

In The Girlfriend episode 3, even though Laura approves of the flat, she realizes Daniel is moving there with Cherry. This marks the beginning of their tug of war for Daniel's affection and loyalty. Then comes Daniel's birthday, which he celebrates with his mother, always with music and dumplings, but Cherry's climbing trip plan comes in the way.

When Laura tells Daniel about her feelings for Cherry, Daniel accuses her of suffocating him with her concerns and decides to spend his birthday with Cherry alone.

Some details about Cherry's credit cards being maxed out emerge, hinting at her internal motive of being with Daniel. Laura notices that Cherry is trying to manage her image in front of Daniel and his family. She receives a tense call from her ex, Nicholas, while she warns her mother to stay silent about a dark incident that happened. Cherry's mother is in fear of her "relapse", which adds to the mystery. Laura is in an open relationship with Howard in The Girlfriend. After the incident with Daniel, she leans on Lilith, her ex-lover. She then receives a devastating call about Daniel slipping during his climbing trip and hitting his head badly. Cherry had rushed Daniel back to London, where he was taken to the ICU.

Laura has been over-conscious of Daniel after losing her daughter, Rose. Howard is quick to point this out, reminding Laura that her intensity with Daniel borders on smothering. She is a woman engulfed in personal insecurity and loneliness, while Cherry becomes the new reason. She had one stable identity because of Daniel, and Cherry's connection was threatening even that.

This is what leads her to become. a detective, and finding clues to believe Cherry is a psychotic stalker. Whether she’s right about Cherry or simply projecting her grief and loneliness remains uncertain.

Daniel is critical in the hospital. The doctor comes out to Howard and Laura and tells them to say their final goodbyes. This is when Laura calls Cherry and tells her that Daniel is dead. This is going to be the truth in a matter of time, but suddenly, Daniel began to respond.

All this while, Laura doesn't bother to reveal the truth to Cherry, as she wanted to separate them, while Daniel is under treatment. This is how Laura ends up saying the biggest lie to "protect" her son in The Girlfriend.
