The Gray House, produced by Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, has finally found a U.S. home. Deadline reports that this drama series, based on a true story from the American Civil War, has landed a streaming deal with Prime Video. The limited series, backed by Paramount Global label Republic Pictures, will start streaming in early 2026 in the United States.
The outlet also offers a further peek into this historical drama about female spies, starring Amethyst Davis, Mary Louise Parker, Daisy Head, and Ben Vereen. Its plot synopsis, per Deadline, reads:
"The drama focuses on the true story of a group of unsung women, a Virginia socialite, her mother, a formerly enslaved sister-in-arms, and the city’s most notorious courtesan. They operate deep inside the corridors of Confederate power and transform an underground railroad into an effective underground spy network, risking life and liberty."
The project comes from Leslie Greif, who co-wrote it along with John Sayles and Darrell Fetty. Greif has previously been the creator and EP on the showbiz drama series The Offer, which centered around the making of The Godfather. In 2017, Greif co-directed Brando, a biographical film documenting the legacy of the revered Hollywood actor, Marlon Brando.
In an earlier conversation with Deadline, Greif revealed his creative process and his work with musical artists from different genres to build a soundtrack for The Gray House.
The Gray House EP, Leslie Greif revealed his thought process behind the show's songs

In September 2024, Leslie Greif shed light on his process of compiling the show’s extended soundtrack. He revealed all the artists who composed original tracks for the show. It includes veteran country singer Willie Nelson, gospel singer Lainey Wilson, country-pop star Shania Twain, and rapper Killer Mike, among others.
Jon Bon Jovi also co-wrote one of the songs, making The Gray House a star-studded affair. Greif explained why he wanted artists from different genres to contribute to the show's OST. He told Deadline:
“My idea was, instead of having one [end] title song, I’m going to have eight different songs by Grammy-winning artists and in different genres of music, which are written for our show and are going to tell a story of that episode."
He also added:
“All of these people came in, based on the trailer, the theme of the show, and wanting to be a part of something that was important.”
According to Deadline, The Gray House will also feature musical tracks from The War and Treaty, Adrienne Warren, Larkin Poe, and Scott Stapp. Besides the musical stars, the show also casts a talented ensemble of actors, including:
- Hannah James
- Paul Anderson
- Colin Morgan
- Ian Duff
- Sam Trammell
- Rob Morrow
- Christopher McDonald
- Colin O’Donoghue
- Keith David
- Robert Knepper

Speaking about the show's other departments, it is produced by Morgan Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment and Kevin Costner’s Territory Pictures. Leslie Greif also executive-produced it on behalf of his Big Dreams Entertainment, alongside Lori McCreary, Howard Kaplan, and Rod Lake.
In another interview with TV Insider, Greif addressed the importance of revisiting projects about the American Civil War (like the 1989 film Glory) and their relevance to present-day situations. He said:
"You know what is happening in today’s times in this country. We’re on the verge of something cataclysmic. Same thing as the Civil War. When we tell these stories, I think it has the tendency or ability to remind us of where we came from and who we are, and make up our minds where we want to go. And what was that all about?"
The Gray House is slated to release in early 2026 on Prime Video in the US.
