The Great British Bake Off Season 16 Episode 4: What happened during the Technical challenge?
Before announcing the Technical challenge, The Great British Bake Off hosts asked the judge, Prue Leith, to share words of wisdom. She told the bakers to prepare themselves for a lot of "elbow grease." Soon, the judges were asked to leave the tent as the Technical challenge was to be judged blind.
"So, for your Technical challenge, Prue would love you to recreate that fondly remembered classic school cake. Your school cake must consist of vanilla sponge, white glassy icing, and then finished with sprinkles and a nice jug of custard," shared the hosts.
The Great British Bake Off hosts also mentioned that there would be a twist. Bakers had to prepare everything from scratch, including the sprinkles. While some of the bakers thought that making a school cake was "too basic." But when they learned the twist, they understood the assignment.
As the bakers got started with their school cake preparations, judges were away from the tent. Paul Hollywood said that with a sponge cake and custard, it was a "great" Technical challenge.
Listening to him, judge Prue Leith added:
"The bakers have to do everything from scratch and with no modern equipment. So they've got to beat the sugar and butter by hand. If they don't beat that really well, they won't get the rise."
She also revealed that to make the sprinkles, bakers would have to pile the lines and wait till they were "absolutely set." Then they could chop them into the sprinkles and scatter them on top of the icing. She also talked about another requirement that bakers had to fulfill. It was to prepare a lump-free custard.
Inside the tent, bakers were getting their muscles worked out as they mixed butter and sugar for the cake batter. Later, some of them also faced issues while making the piping bags and while going through the sprinkle making process.
Later in The Great British Bake Off episode, the judges returned to the tent for a blind tasting. According to the instructions, they were expecting "16 school cakes with a light, moist sponge, neat icing, and handmade colorful sprinkles served with a jug of delicious custard."
After blind tasting, judges ranked the bakers:
- 9th Place: Nadia,
- 8th Place: Nataliia,
- 7th Place: Jessika,
- 6th Place: Tom,
- 5th Place: Lesley,
- 4th Place: Toby,
- 3rd Place: Iain,
- 2nd Place: Aaron,
- 1st Place: Jasmine.
For Jasmine's cake, which received the 1st place, Prue Leith said:
"Jasmine, that is a beautiful cake. Perfectly risen. Your sprinkles are excellent."
Later in her private confession, Jasmine said that she couldn't believe that the judges liked her cake. She also recalled the judges tasting it again with custard poured over the cake and then appreciated the combination as well.
