The Harry Potter Universe has many elements that have been carried over to the real world. One of these is the fictional sport of Quidditch, which in spirit takes a lot from soccer or football. But over the years, several fans have pointed out how the points system of the sport does not make sense.

For the unversed, in Quidditch, players scoring goals with the Quaffle score ten points, but catching the snitch earns you 150 points.

This strange element has Harry Potter fans make fun of the sport despite liking the series. The upcoming HBO series has the opportunity to correct this issue that has plagued the franchise since its very beginning in 1997.

Explaining Harry Potter's Quidditch:

The Quidditch chapters and sequences were some of the most exciting chapters in the Harry Potter books and movies. It is played on an oval-shaped pitch that has three hoops at each end that a team has to guard, taking a cue from soccer. Each team has seven players, consisting of two Beaters, one Keeper, three Chasers, and one Seeker.

The main equipment used in the game are two bludgers, two magically powered balls that just try attacking the players. The two beaters use clubs to direct the bludgers towards the opposing team's players. The quaffle, on the other hand, is not magically powered; thus, the chasers must carry the quaffle and throw it into the opposing team's hoops, which the keeper will try and defend, much like the goalkeeper.

It is the position of the Seeker that's the problem. The Harry Potter books and movies emphasize the position of the Seeker as the most important one, despite there being a captain. The function of the Seeker is to catch the Golden Snitch, which ends the match and wins the team 150 points. This aspect is what fans have pointed out as nonsensical. At this point, it might be better to write out the snitch or reduce the significance.

Reducing the Seeker and the Snitch's significance is something that was done in the game Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which was released in November 2024. This game changed the way the Golden Snitch works, and even reduced the Seeker's significance in the team. Catching the Snitch doesn't mean that the team has won, and doing so will earn only 30 points.

Plus, altering the Snitch and Seeker's function might finally solve the one element of the books that even Rowling found challenging.

Back in July 2005, Rowling revealed the one element she found difficult to write:

On July 16, 2005, Rowling sat down for an interview with The Leaky Cauldron, a popular fansite. In that interview, the interviewer asked the author about what the latter meant when she said that she felt happiness after writing one element in the sixth book, Half Blood Prince, because the then-upcoming seventh book wouldn't feature it.

Rowling responded, saying that the element that won't be returning in the then-untitled seventh book was Quidditch. The author's exact words were:

"To be honest with you, Quidditch matches have been the bane of my life in the Harry Potter books. They are necessary in that people expect Harry to play Quidditch, but there is a limit to how many ways you can have them play Quidditch together and for something new to happen."
