The delay of another prequel may trigger a ripple effect - and all signs point to House of the Dragon Season 3 being caught in its wake.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms may push House of the Dragon back further than expected

Though House of the Dragon Season 3 is already filming in the U.K, signs suggest that its return could be put on hold until late 2026. The culprit? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the next GOT prequel.

Originally planned for a late 2025 release, the six-episode series is now being aimed for a release in early 2026, despite having wrapped up the production in 2024. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed this schedule change, which has thrown expectations for HotD's release into disarray.

The problem isn't just the delay itself - it's how HBO staggers its major fantasy releases. The network is unlikely to stack two GOT titles so close together. If A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms occupies the first quarter of 2026, HotD might just be pushed to somewhere after summer.

And given the show's complex CGI requirements, that extra time would definitely be needed.

The concern is real. if Season 3 doesn't air until after April 2026, it will officially mark the longest break in the franchise.

House of the Dragon enters production amid high expectations and rising tension

Despite the looming timeline issues, House of the Dragon Season 3 has begun its production journey. Cameras are rolling at the Warner Bros. Studios.

The show-runner Ryan Condal has promised an even grander scale in Season 3, teasing the adaptation of four events from George R.R Martin's Fire & Blood.

“Season 2 is huge, but Season 3 is even ‘huger’ in many ways...”

He also revealed plans for a unique, character-focused episode that will break the traditional format;

“We are tackling four major events from the book, bringing them to life in a way that will elevate the stakes even further.”

With such ambitions behind the scenes, the longer wait could perhaps be justified - assuming the final product delivers.

However, this does not take away from the fact that there could quite possibly be a long aiting period for HotD Season 3 to finally fit our screens due to the delay of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

While House of the Dragon Season 3 continues to raise its narrative stakes, scheduling setbacks may undercut its momentum and preferred speed.

The delay of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms hints at a prolonged drought before we get to see Season 3 hit our home screens.

For GOT fans hoping for a faster franchise rollout, this may be another painful wait.
