House of David surprised everyone early this year as the show received appreciation from both critics and viewers who had been waiting for a grand adaptation of a biblical story for a while. People especially praised the lavish production value of the series. The epic storytelling had fans stream every episode weekly between February 27, 2025, and April 3, 2025.
This is why it was not surprising when Prime Video renewed the series for a second season on March 18, 2025. The head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, released this statement while confirming House of David Season 2:
“Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn’s compelling creative vision has solidified our belief in the series and we are excited to deliver more of the story to our customers. We look forward to a continued journey with Wonder Project as we further expand our slate to encompass faith-based series.”
Gunn and Erwin also expressed happiness as Prime Video's House of David was renewed for a second season:
“We are humbled by the extraordinary reaction this show has earned from the faith audience worldwide. Thanks to them and our partners at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Wonder Project will bring more of the Bible and this epic saga to a global audience. Congratulations to our incredible cast and crew.”
Thus, as the second season approaches its release date, here's a recap of the first season.
House of David Season 1 recap
The Prime Video biblical series follows the shepherd David's attempts to take down the mighty giant Goliath. However, there's more to David's destiny than just defeating Goliath: becoming the next king of Israel after Saul.
"House of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel. The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise."
Here are some of the major events that occur in House of David Season 1:
- King Saul defies God
King Saul usually represents pride overshadowing faith in the biblical stories, and Prime Video's House of David adapts this aspect of the former ruler of Israel. In the first episode of the series, Saul spares the King of the Amalekites, Agag, and some of his kingdom's finest livestock, while God's orders to King Saul were to wipe out the Amalekites.
The defiance supposedly irks both Samuel and God, and the latter curses Saul for not adhering to the divine order. Saul's mental health begins to deteriorate as he gets visions of his and his sons' downfall. He starts attacking people around him as he begins to see the demons from his visions in them.
- Meanwhile, David takes his first step towards his destiny
The first season details David's journey from his origin as a shepherd to his heroic moment of bringing down the Philistine giant Goliath. In the very first episode, we see him single-handedly killing the lion that has been feasting on his sheep. Then, over the course of the eight-episode series, we see David move closer to his destiny as Saul hires him to play Lyre in his court and becomes entangled with Mychal, the king's youngest daughter.
- Saul's family
Saul is married to Queen Ahinoam and has four children: Jonathan, Eshbaal, Mirab, and Mychal. Of these four, Jonathan and Mychal care about their father's rule, but the other two do not share the eldest and youngest siblings' passion for politics. Eshbaal is exiled for his affair with an Elder's daughter. Meanwhile, Mirab's marriage is fixed with the son of the power-hungry leader Adriel.
However, before the wedding ceremony, Saul attacks Adriel, and the wedding is cancelled.
- The giants join the Philistines
The Philistine King Achish has his sights on Israel and designs a plan to take over Saul's throne. For this, he approaches a group of giants, who are ostracized by society in general, led by a woman who also serves as their adoptive mother. She tells Achish that her giants will join the war effort against Israel only if he gives his throne to one of them, which kills the negotiation.
However, Achish comes up with an even more devious plan in which he hires Joab, an assassin from Israel, to kill the woman. Joab kills the woman and takes the name of the house of Saul. In her dying breath, she tells her adopted children to avenge her, and thus the giants join Achish for revenge.
- David vs Goliath
The first episode of House of David sees David prepare for his fight with the giant Goliath. However, viewers saw the fight play out in the eighth and final episode of the first season, David and Goliath - Part 2. The season ends with Goliath's defeat and death at the hands of David.
The series returns next Sunday:
While the series was renewed in March this year, almost a week after the release of the fifth episode, fans were surprised to see the second season coming out this fast. Based on the trailer, it seems that this season will see he fallout of the season 1 finale as David has to contend with his popularity in the kingdom as Saul grows suspicious of him.
"Season Two of the biblical drama series House of David from Wonder Project and Amazon MGM Studios follows the aftermath of the battle between David and Goliath and David's rise to the throne. As he navigates palace politics, his family’s jealousy, and a growing romance, David steps deeper into his destiny and learns what it means to become a great leader."
As we wait for the second season, which streams next week, binge the entire first season, which is available in its entirety on Prime Video.
