The Hunting Wives has secured a second season as an exclusively Netflix-branded series. What began as a Lionsgate project for Starz ended up being reshaped when Netflix licensed the show last July. At first, there was little promotion, just another Monday release. Then the numbers grew. Quickly. The show stayed visible for weeks on the streamer’s charts, which made renewal feel less like a surprise and more like an outcome waiting to happen.

The new deal changes the show’s status. Season 2 will arrive as a Netflix original in nearly every region where the service is available, with only four exceptions. Canada and Australia are part of that group. It means the story now belongs to Netflix almost everywhere, turning a domestic acquisition into a global brand.

A story rooted in Texas

The plot follows Sophie, played by Brittany Snow, and Margo, portrayed by Malin Åkerman. Their friendship and rivalry create a spiral of secrets and crimes, all under the shadow of Maple Brook, Texas. The setting is more than a backdrop. It shapes the choices, the social circles, the atmosphere. The first season drew heavily from May Cobb’s novel, but the next one will not. It is set to expand on what was left hanging, moving past the book.

Audience response

Netflix shared that The Hunting Wives spent five weeks on the global top 10 list for English-language series. During that time, it crossed 20 million views. In the U.S., the series remained in the top 10 for six weeks straight and even reached number one. That growth came despite the fact that the show had already been released on other platforms: Stan in Australia, Crave in Canada, OSN in the Middle East, and HOT in Israel. The U.S. debut gave the show fresh energy, pushing Lionsgate and Netflix to renegotiate rights.

A cliffhanger still unresolved

The season ended with a scene that defined the renewal’s urgency. Sophie pushed the body of Kyle, Margo’s brother, from a cliff into a river. At that moment, she had also answered Margo’s call on Kyle’s phone without realizing it. A single mistake, combined with a violent act, created a cliffhanger too sharp to leave behind.

What The Hunting Wives Season 2 will bring

Season 2 will have eight episodes, just like the first. Lionsgate and Netflix confirmed this detail. The narrative will pick up directly from the finale. According to the official logline, Sophie and Margo begin apart, secrets from the past and new conflicts eventually pull them together again. The framing question becomes simple but pressing: Who is in control, the hunters or the hunted?

Cast continuity

The returning cast includes Malin Åkerman, Brittany Snow, Dermot Mulroney, Jamie Ray Newman, Evan Jonigkeit, and George Ferrier. Lionsgate had already secured options for the actors and exercised them once the new deal was made. Every main character whose storyline allowed for a comeback will appear again.

Critical views

Variety’s review noted the show’s use of cultural contrasts as a strong element. Alison Herman described the clash between different lifestyles as one of the aspects that stood out, even as the plot moved into crime and investigation. This lens made the series more than a thriller. It positioned the story within broader conversations, giving it weight beyond the mystery itself.

Production details

Rebecca Cutter, creator of The Hunting Wives and also known for Hightown, continues as showrunner. She remains an executive producer alongside Erwin Stoff of 3 Arts Entertainment and May Cobb. In a statement, Cutter said she is excited to write these characters again and promised another ride through Maple Brook, keeping the tone intense and unpredictable.

Release timeline

No official release date is set yet. What is confirmed: the second season will be available as a Netflix original in nearly every market. Production is already moving forward. Eight episodes are on the way, and the show is now positioned as part of the global Netflix catalog. Given the scale of the deal, Season 2 is expected to reach a far wider audience than the first.

A return to Maple Brook

The Hunting Wives began with limited reach but turned into one of the most-watched titles of the summer. Now, with renewal confirmed, the series enters a different stage. The first year showed how quickly a show can grow once it finds its audience. The second promises to continue from that same cliff edge, with the same cast, and with Netflix fully behind it. Maple Brook will be the stage again, only now the world is already watching
