It has been five years since Absentia aired its last episode on Prime Video. The thriller drama has found success on streaming once again with its release on Netflix. A new set of audiences has now watched the show and made it a global hit.

The series stars Stana Katic in the lead role of Special Agent Emily Byrne. The FBI agent is presumed dead while tracking a serial killer. But she returns alive six years later. In the meantime, her husband has already married another woman.

After the show premiered, Stana Katic had an interview in which she talked about what convinced her to star in Absentia. Speaking with TV Guide in 2018, the actress said she was drawn to playing an anti-hero like Emily Byrne:

“The main draw for me in this character and this show was the idea of playing an anti-hero. The idea of playing a character like Cillian Murphy's character in Peaky Blinders or Tom Hardy's character in Taboo - they are these characters that the audience is rooting for throughout the season, but we ride a really thin line because our own morality is in question the whole time.”

Stana Katic once talked about why she chose to play Emily Byrne in Absentia

Stana Katic added that apart from being an anti-hero, Emily Byrne is also a survivor in Absentia. She revealed that she was inspired by the stories of World War II and the Holocaust survivors. Stana wanted to portray a complex character on screen who went through a similar horrific experience:

“Also, at the time, I was reading about survivors of WWII and the Holocaust and I was inspired by their stories of survival, about all the complexities of a person who has come out of that horrific experience. I thought that would also be an interesting quality to explore in a character like Emily.”

Stana played the role of Emily Byrne in all three seasons of Absentia between 2017 and 2020. Audiences loved her portrayal of an FBI agent who was presumed dead for years. She was eventually found living in the woods, but had no memory of what happened to her.

When she tried to return to her normal life, she found out that her husband had remarried, and his second wife was raising her son. But her problems did not end there. She soon also became a suspect in a series of murders and had to prove her innocence.

The supporting cast members in the show included Patrick Heusinger as Special Agent Nick Durand, Neil Jackson as Jack Byrne, Paul Freeman as Warren Byrne, Cara Theobold as Alice Durand, and Angel Bonanni as Detective Tommy Gibbs.

The rest of the star cast included Christopher Colquhoun as Special Agent Derek Crown, Ralph Ineson as Special Agent Adam Radford, Matthew Le Nevez as Special Agent Cal Isaac, Patrick McAuley as Flynn Durand, and Natasha Little as Special Agent Julianne Gunnarsen.

All three seasons of Absentia are now streaming on Netflix.
