MGM+'s supernatural horror series, The Institute, starring Ben Barnes and Joe Freeman, debuted on July 13, 2025, with three episodes. With each episode of The Institute, the anticipation kept building, and by Episode 6, the series shocked the viewers with a major death.
In Episode 6 of The Institute, Maureen Alvorson (Jane Luk), the kind janitor who helped Luke Ellis escape the facility, died by suicide. Before dying, she went to Sigby's office, scribbled a message Hell is Waiting with a black marker, and hanged herself on the door.
Her death isn't just another plot twist. It's a turning point that deepens the horror of the story and how the Institute's inner workings. Turns out, it's far darker than Stephen King's book.
Who is Maureen in The Institute?
Maureen was the kind-hearted janitor of the sinister facility run by Ms. Sigsby. However, she did carry the burden of debts and a broken family. Unlike most of the staff, she sympathized with the children trapped inside. She also built a sweet bond with Luke Ellis, the telekinetic prodigy trapped in the facility.
Unlike other employees, Maureen always slipped tokens to kids to shield them in small ways. But her kindness was laced with guilt. She garnered the extra money from Julia Sigsby and Trevor Stackhouse by feeding them information, and that did take a toll on her conscience.
What happened in The Institute Episode 6?
In Episode 6, Maureen decided to take a stand against the facility's brutalities. She helped Luke escape and hid his body in a laundry cart. It was quite a nerve-racking and tension-filled sequence to see her instruct Luke to escape the facility. She uttered,
"Once you're past the fence. Just head downhill right to the river. You're going to have to cross that river and then walk downstream until you get to the Red Steps. I'll come and pick you up once when I am off shift. I know a reporter. They are gonna tell your story."
She then handed Luke a flash drive and told him,
"Show the world what goes on here."
Turns out the reporter, Kate, worked for the Institute, and she tried to harm Luke. Luke used his telekinetic powers to save himself, and after a scuffle with Tim, Kate fell into the river.
Out of fear, Maureen decided to make the final decision to end her life. But before she took the drastic step, she called Kate and said,
"I need you to meet him yourself. Get him somewhere safe. Make sure the world hears his story. He is expecting to meet me in the Red Steps"
Little did she know that Kate was a traitor. She was scared and didn't want the staff to discover her betrayal. She hanged herself in the Sigsby's office and left a note condemning the facility scribbled on the floor.
But do you know that this sequence was quite different from King's novel, where Maureen was terminally ill and eventually died. Here, the writers tweaked and shifted the focus. Maureen didn't die of natural causes; instead, she chose death. Her suicide, driven by fear and guilt, made the scene even more tragic.
Her fear of interrogation, torture, and retaliation hangs over the moment, and so does her guilt. Years of silence and complicity finally catch up to her. Surely, helping Luke was redemption, but in her mind, it wasn't enough, and the only way out was death.
The fallout
What makes Maureen's death even more chilling is how the Institute responds to it. Rather than arranging a proper funeral, Ms. Sigsby orders to cover up the situation as the suicide could raise suspicion. The secrecy underscores how corrupt and ruthless the Institute truly is. Sigsby orders the Maureen's body to be kept at the security office.
