Horror genre fans are in for a treat as The Institute, the television adaptation of Stephen King’s eponymous 2019 novel, has arrived on screens. The MGM+ series revolves around Luke Ellis, a genius teenager who suddenly wakes up in a strange facility.
Luke is surrounded by kids who also have unusual abilities like him, but he soon realizes the owners of the facility are hiding some horrific secrets. Meanwhile, his fate gets entangled with a local police officer with a haunted past.

The series is slated to feature eight episodes in all. The first two episodes were released together on July 13, 2025, on MGM+. The rest of the episodes will be dropped on the subsequent six Sundays, with the finale scheduled to be released on August 24, 2025. All the episodes are expected to come out at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT. What is The Institute about?
The show is about a teen named Luke Ellis who possesses some extraordinary skills. One night, Luke goes to sleep in his room as usual, but the next day he wakes up at a mysterious facility where other children possessing similar abilities have been kept. The facility is run by Ms. Sigsby, who has an eerie vibe about her.
Luke soon realizes that the facility is actually conducting horrible experiments on the children. As he endeavors to break free, he seeks help from Tim Jamieson, a haunted former police officer who recently moved to the town. The official synopsis of the show reads:
“Teen genius Luke Ellis wakes up in a strange place full of children who got there the same way he did, and who all, like him, possess unusual abilities. This is The Institute, run by the mysterious Ms. Sigsby.”

The series stars Joe Freeman as Luke Ellis, Ben Barnes as Tim Jamieson, and Mary-Louise Parker as Ms. Sigsby.
