Abbie Cornish and Dougray Scott not only star in The Invisible but also executive produce, highlighting their artistic engagement. The series is directed by Jozua Malherbe (Devil's Peak) and Amy Jephta (Barakat), uniting global star power with South African narrative experience.

Local actors Kim Engelbrecht, Tumisho Masha, and Tim Theron are included in the supporting cast. ITV Studios will be responsible for worldwide distribution, indicating significant overseas potential. This production also marks M-Net's increasing ambition to offer South African thrillers to an expanded international audience.

Narrative and Themes

Placed against the harsh landscape of South Africa, The Invisible concerns Emma, a woman who comes home to reclaim her estranged brother, and Dekker, a tormented former bodyguard who is retained for protection. Their lives intersect with that of Inspector Jack Phatudi, who is on the case of vigilante murders of poachers in the vicinity of Kruger National Park.

As these narratives collide, hidden political corruption and conspiracies come to light, including them in the events based on the actual 1986 plane crash that assassinated Mozambican President Samora Machel. The series guarantees ethical complexity, delving into themes of guilt, justice, and redemption through richly human characters making their way in a treacherous world. Author Deon Meyer said:

“To say I’m proud, grateful, and excited about The Invisible is a vast understatement.”

The Invisible is not simply an action thriller; it is an exploration of how trauma, memory, and truth inform human resilience through character. Its global cast and real-world inspirations render it with a gritty reality on display in a few thrillers today. By merging crime, politics, and emotion in the context of South Africa, the series seeks to transcend borders.

With Deon Meyer's mastery of storytelling and tour de force performances from Cornish and Scott, the series has all the ingredients of an international breakout hit. And with the hype building, this union is another milestone in taking African storytelling to the world.
