When we thought the Yellowstone universe was coming to an end, Taylor Sheridan brings us back with a new spinoff: ‘Y: Marshals’. This upcoming series will once again explore the world of the Dutton family, but with a completely fresh perspective. It’s action-packed, character-driven, and emotionally raw, just how fans like it.

However, one of the major differences between the spinoff and the original will be its location. Yes, you read that right. Unlike Yellowstone, 'Y: Marshals' will not be shot in Montana! After Yellowstone’s fifth and final season, Taylor Sheridan wanted to expand the universe beyond the Dutton Ranch.

The official logline reads:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

But the idea wasn’t exclusively Sheridan’s. Spencer Hudnut, known for shows like SEAL Team and Blacklist: Redemption, had been developing it for over a year. When he finally pitched it to Sheridan, it was approved immediately, and that speaks volumes.

Sheridan is stepping in as an executive producer, offering his approval and creative vision. Hudnut will serve as showrunner. With his strong background in high-intensity action dramas, we can anticipate exciting missions and emotional moments.

Where does Why Marshalls fit in the Yellowstone timeline?

The events of Y: Marshals happen right after Yellowstone Season 5. It focuses on Kayce Dutton as he begins a new chapter by leaving the ranch to join an elite U.S. Marshals team. While this is a fresh start for Kayce, it stays closely connected to the Yellowstone universe.

Fans of Kayce Dutton, rejoice! Luke Grimes returns, but this isn’t the same Kayce as before. Grimes shared that although he wasn’t eager to rejoin the Yellowstone world so soon, the opportunity was “too good to pass up.”

According to Grimes, this is a version of Kayce we’ve never seen before. Early events in the show “free him up to be the guy we always wanted him to be.” That sounds mysterious, right?

There are rumors that something tragic happens early in the show, something that pushes Kayce toward justice with a new purpose, possibly involving the loss of his loved ones. At its core, "Y: Marshals" is about Kayce joining a special U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. Combining his cowboy roots and Navy SEAL training, Kayce becomes a protector of the land, dispensing justice in the most rugged, unforgiving way possible.

But don’t expect a typical shoot-'em-up western. This is a layered drama. The show examines the mental toll of being a marshal. We’ll see how Kayce and his teammates balance family life with the dangers of their work. It’s about sacrifice, loss, duty, and survival—things Yellowstone fans are already familiar with.

Think Yellowstone meets Law & Order, with horses and guns. That’s what Y: Marshals promises. Each episode will likely feature a new mission or case, while also exploring the characters’ personal lives.

Will Monica and Tate return?

The early word hints they might, but there’s a twist. Fans are speculating that Monica and Tate could be killed off early in the show, leading Kayce down a darker new path. Grimes hinted at a major change in Kayce’s life from the start.

While some familiar faces may appear, this is largely a fresh start. Expect new characters, new conflicts, and new villains. It’s a chance to expand the universe while keeping Yellowstone’s core essence.

Y: Marshals being filmed in Utah’s Summit County, where the first few seasons of Yellowstone were also shot. That doesn’t mean the setting won’t resemble Montana; it just means the actual Dutton Ranch won’t be there. Still, the landscapes are stunning, and the Western vibes will remain.

Filming in Summit County is actually a smart move — it’s cheaper, has great scenery, and already feels like Yellowstone. Long-time fans will recognize the same atmosphere, even if it’s not the exact location.

The good news? Production is scheduled to begin this summer (2025). The show will have a 13-episode first season and will be part of CBS’s mid-season lineup. What’s not confirmed yet is whether it’ll also stream on Paramount Plus. Fingers crossed!

Reports indicate CBS wants Y: Marshals to look and feel as expensive and high-quality as Yellowstone. That’s a big promise, but also a significant investment. The network clearly believes in this show’s potential.

Could we see Rip, Beth, or even Thomas Rainwater show up? Possibly. Grimes mentioned there will be some familiar faces, which hints at crossover potential, especially with the Beth and Rip spinoff coming. This could be part of a larger plan to build a shared Yellowstone universe, Marvel-style.
