Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin once praised another epic historical drama, The Last Kingdom, in his blog.

The show was popular not just for being a historical drama, but also because it is one of the best in its genre. Along with Martin, the show managed to win the hearts of several fans.

However, reports confirm that Netflix, which had the rights to stream the show since season 2, will soon be losing it. Starting December 9, 2026, The Last Kingdom will not be available on Netflix unless a new licensing deal is made. So this gives you a year to watch the drama if you haven't already.

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix until December 9, 2026, which gives viewers a year to enjoy the show. The streaming rights for the show are expiring soon, as the platform is going through a content shuffle. The tale of Uhtred isn't the only one leaving Netflix, but many other TV shows and movies will suffer the same fate.

What makes the historical drama more interesting is Game of Thrones writer George Martin himself, citing this show as one of the best in the genre, even though this show doesn't feature any dragons or is more realistic compared to GOT.

This show is adapted from a novel. It first debuted on the BBC in 2015. After seasons 1 and 2 gained popularity, Netflix acquired the show in 2018.

The show paints the world of 9th-century England when Alfred the Great was at the rise. The show is centered around a warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who is going through an identity crisis and a dilemma over his responsibilities. Uhtred was born as a Saxon lord who was bound to rule eventually, but as a child was captured by Danish Vikings and raised as one of them.

When his Danish family is killed under the rule of Alfred the Great, Uhtred is dealing with the dilemma of saving a culture that protected and raised him or being loyal to the land he is about to rule. Moreover, the series comes with combat scenes, and well-choreographed fighting sequences complement the political intrigue and deeply personal rivalries. This mixes human drama with historical backdrop and production scale, making the show a worthwhile watch.

The final season 5 shows Uhtred's struggle to build a united England. He also keeps up the struggle to find his ancestral home.
