This week's episode of The Last of Us Season 2, “Day One”, was more eventful than last week's episode, "The Path". But there is a breather of a moment in which we hear Ellie sing and play the guitar. Other than this vulnerable, beautiful moment, this episode contained violent and gory images through and through. Moreover, this episode officially confirms that the season is taking place in the year 2029.
Moreover, "Day One," the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2, also introduces an important character to us, Isaac Dixon, played by actor Jeffrey Wright, who played the same role in The Last of Us Part II game. Wright had provided the motion-capture performance for the character in the 2020 game. Here, we are also given a glimpse into his surprising past.
The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4 recap:
Here are some of the major events in the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2:
- Isaac Dixon makes his entrance
We already knew from last week's preview that Jeffrey Wright would be reprising his role as Isaac Dixon from the game. In the game, Isaac is a former soldier who, after the outbreak of the Cordyceps virus, joined the WLF, i.e., the Washington Liberation Front, and used his experience as a war veteran to fight the oppressive FEDRA rule. Other than that, nothing more of his past is known.
However, HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 gives a backstory for Isaac. It looks like he may or may not have been a veteran before the outbreak. That's not clear, but given his skills, he may have been a soldier in the army before the apocalypse. But the show adds another layer. It looks like Isaac joined the FEDRA after the cordyceps outbreak in 2003.
The episode opens with a flashback set in 2018, in which Isaac and his fellow FEDRA soldiers are traveling across the Seattle Quarantine Zone. However, their vehicle stops in the middle of the road, and Isaac sees some WLF members led by a woman named Hanrahan. Isaac orders his men to stay inside and takes one awkward soldier with him to meet Hanrahan and her men.
After a brief introduction between Hanrahan and Isaac, things shockingly take a turn as he murders every FEDRA soldier except for the awkward one who he took with him. Isaac tells the man to make his choice, and it seems he chooses to join the WLF. Eleven years later, Isaac is interrogating a Seraphite by brutally torturing him. But the Seraphite refuses, and in frustration, the WLF leader kills the Seraphite.
- Dina discovers Ellie's secret in this The Last of Us Season 2 episode
Dina and Ellie break into a WLF building at night to take advantage of the cover darkness provides. However, things take a turn for the worse one after the other once they are inside in this episode of The Last of Us Season 2. First, they discover that the "wolves," i.e., the members of the WLF, have all been brutally murdered by Seraphite or "Scars". Some Wolves come inside, trying to find the Scars who murdered their comrades.
As Ellie and Dina try to escape, they are discovered by the wolves, who try to shoot them, believing that they killed the ones inside. The two run inside an abandoned subway, and the wolves pursuing them follow inside, believing it to be abandoned. However, that's not the case, and a horde of infected people swarms all of the living.
Ellie and Dina manage to escape the subway, and the former even saves her love by taking a bite. They both hide inside an old theater, where Ellie tries to convince Dina about her immunity. Ellie suggests that Dina let her sleep, and if she turns, then the latter can shoot her. Dina is finally convinced when Ellie wakes up and reveals her secret to her.
- Dina reveals her secret and love to Ellie
Dina is glad to learn about Ellie's immunity and reveals that she is pregnant. Earlier in this episode of The Last of Us Season 2, right after the intro, Dina had broken into an empty pharmacy where she came across some pregnancy sticks. She confirmed it multiple times, thus believing that she is having Jesse's baby. After that, they both share their feelings for each other and engage in physical intimacy.
In the morning, Dina shares that she is bisexual and apologizes to Ellie for being late. They both start making plans for their life ahead, and this sweet and tender moment is again disrupted by the violent world. This time, they hear violent bombings and, on the WLF stolen radio, hear Nora's name. Nora is the doctor in Abby's crew. Ellie tells Dina to stay behind inside the theater as the former tries to find Nora.
