On April 13, 2025, The Last of Us made a dramatic and emotional comeback for its much-awaited second season. The show, which is renowned for its realistic storytelling and faithfulness to the original material, threw viewers right into the more sinister events of The Last of Us Part II.

Ellie, a teenage survivor immune to the Cordyceps infection, is the central character of the story. In the main storyline, she lives in the Jackson settlement with Joel and his brother Tommy. However, after Ellie and Joel encounter Abby Anderson, the daughter of a Firefly surgeon, the events of season 2 quickly spiral out of control.

A pivotal moment occurred when Joel unexpectedly passed away in episode 2. In an act of revenge, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) attacked Joel and used a golf club to torture him until he died. After witnessing the murder, Ellie tried to stop it, but Abby's group held her back. One of the most terrifying scenes of the season was her helplessness and sobs. The violence was more than simply a plot point.

Three months had passed since the events of Episode 3, "The Path," when Joel passed away. Rather than having any physical injuries, Ellie was brought to the hospital due to the psychological impact of what she had witnessed.

Ellie had gone into an emotional shutdown and was showing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociation, and unresolved survivor's guilt, according to Gail, the local therapist. She refused to talk about what happened during the attack, which caused tension between Tommy, Maria, and Dina.

This short storyline demonstrated how profoundly Joel's passing affected Ellie. In stark contrast to the savagery of the outside world, her admission into psychiatric treatment also showed the community's efforts to support her.

Cast of The Last of Us Season 2

For Season 2, the main cast of The Last of Us made a comeback and as per the storyline, for the first half of the season, Pedro Pascal played Joel Miller again. In her comeback role as Ellie Williams, Bella Ramsey gave a candid, emotionally charged portrayal of a teenager. Dina, Ellie's love interest and ultimately traveling companion on her revenge mission, was portrayed by Isabela Merced in her debut.

Kaitlyn Dever's portrayal of Abby Anderson, whose character development will span numerous episodes and reflect her intricate video game plot, was the most anticipated new addition. Ariela Barer played Mel, the group's medic, and Spencer Lord played Owen, Abby's troubled friend.
