The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3 opened in the aftermath of Joel's (Pedro Pascal) death, after he was brutally killed by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in Episode 2.
The protagonist of the show and the video game of the same name, Joel has been the protector of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) since Season 1. He was living with his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and his wife in Jackson for five years.
While Abby brutally murdered Joel in Episode 2, his brother Tommy was waging his own battle with the infected who had attacked the city.
Episode 3 saw Tommy finally learning about his brother's death, as he sits with Joel's bloodied body and bids him farewell, saying:
"Give Sarah [Joel's daughter] my love."
While the message was short and sweet, Tommy initially had a longer farewell speech for Joel, as Luna revealed to GQ.
Here is what Gabriel Luna revealed about Tommy’s farewell speech in The Last of Us Season 2.
Gabriel Luna reveals the missing parts of Tommy's farewell speech to Joel in The Last of Us Season 2
While fans were still reeling from Joel's heartbreaking death in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, the latest episode opened with its aftermath for Ellie, Tommy and the Jackson community.
Since Abby's crew injured Ellie during Joel's murder, she wakes up in a hospital, where she has visions of Abby brutally beating Joel, and she starts screaming. Elsewhere, Tommy is seen with Joel's wrapped and bloodied body as he silently mourns his brother's death. While the scene was highly charged with emotion, Tommy says only one line to his brother as farewell.
In an interview with GQ, Luna reveals how Tommy's farewell speech to Joel was initially envisioned. However, after performing the scene and practicing his lines, Luna felt that Tommy didn't need to go into such detail in his farewell speech:
''The more I was doing it, I had a sense, like, "No, I don't think we need any of this."
Talking about the omitted parts, Luna added:
''...A lot of what we left out was about Ellie, me telling him what happened to Ellie..."She's hurt, she's hurt bad, but she'll be all right. I'll take care of her," which needs to go unsaid because of course I will. Who else does she have?''
''There was this weird sense of the passing of the torch from Pedro's great leadership to Bella's, Kaitlyn's, myself, and the people who were going to be carrying this story forward from here — Isabela, Young [Mazino], and everyone.''
Luna's comments and their combined decision to cut short Tommy's farewell speech to just one line in The Last of Us reveal that emotions can be translated even without too many words. While Tommy talking about Ellie to Joel would have made sense for the characters and the story, it was a given at that point.
The eerie silence as Tommy watches Joel's battered body and asks him to give his love to Sarah made the scene even more poignant and emotional. And Joel knows that Tommy would protect Ellie, Dina and their community after his brother's passing.
Luna summed it up well in the end, as he told GQ:
''In the end, I mean, what more do you need to say than, "Give Sarah my love."'
