Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby in the post-apocalyptic series The Last of Us, knows firsthand the devastating twists the HBO show can take its audience on. Following the intense Season 2 finale—where it was revealed that Abby will take center stage in Season 3—fans should brace for an even more emotionally charged storyline.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Kaitlyn Dever shares the same sentiment. She warns fans to buckle up for the next season while talking about her experience filming Season 2 and the controversial scene with Pedro Pascal. Here’s what she said.
Kaitlyn Dever warns fans to buckle up for The Last of Us Season 3

It came as a surprise to most viewers of The Last of Us Season 2 when Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby hunts down Pedro Pascal’s Joel for killing her father in Salt Lake City and brutally murders him in a grief-consumed rage. Even fans familiar with the storyline were surprised by how early the show introduced the controversial moment.
In a recent conversation, Dever revealed that although she doesn’t know the full details of what Season 3 will look like, she does know it will place her character front and center instead of Ellie. She also shared that Craig Mazin, one of the showrunners for the HBO show, has warned her to buckle up. She also wants fans to be prepared for what’s coming as well:
"That’s all I know about what’s going to happen. Craig just keeps saying to me, 'You have no idea what’s to come for season three. Just buckle up.' "

Dever also talked about her experience shooting the scene in Season 2 where Abby kills Joel while Ellie is cornered and forced to watch helplessly:
"When I was actually starting to develop the character, I realized, if you look at all these characters, Abby’s not that different from a lot of the other characters in that world. "
"I focused on, what was the main focus of her emotional journey and how calculated she has been about this plan for five years, and how it’s really broken and riddled her with grief. That makes her physically intimidating."
"At the end of the day, I had to think about how sad she is. All she wants is to have this person back in her life. Grief is such an awful feeling, and you just want that feeling to go away so badly when you’re in the middle of it, and you’d do anything to not feel that way anymore."
Dever’s insight into Abby’s emotional journey resonated with many viewers and added depth to her portrayal in The Last of Us. Even if it didn’t, she had Pedro Pascal in her corner—backing her, sharing BTS pictures to remind people they could hate the fictional character for her actions, but not the actor. Dever talked about her experience with Pedro as well:
"I’ve never felt so carried by another actor in my life. I felt like we were really supporting each other and it was such a pivotal moment for both of these characters, really."
Dever’s nuanced portrayal and emotional depth make her return in The Last of Us Season 3 all the more anticipated.
