The Last of Us is a unique HBO series adaptation of a game by the same name, set in a world ruined by a deadly fungus that turns people into monsters. Joel, a tough survivor, must protect Ellie, a brave girl who may hold the cure.

Together, they travel through dangerous lands filled with infected and cruel people. In season two, which still has its new episodes coming out every time we speak, they live in a small, peaceful town with friends and family, but new threats appear.

The Last of Us star revealed that Joel was in a lot of pain before his death. He was filled with grief, remorse, and regret after the death of his daughter Sarah. Despite finding peace with Ellie, his past never left him. While his death was heartbreaking, it brought an end to years of emotional turmoil from which he could never fully recover.

In the world of The Last of Us, the human world has been wiped out by a fatal epidemic. It follows certain survivors as they attempt to survive in this perilous new world, first as a computer game and now as an HBO series adaptation of the same.

Joel Miller and Ellie Williams are at the center of the narrative. Joel is urged to keep Ellie, a teenage girl who might have the infection's cure, safe. In The Last of Us, Joel begins to treat Ellie like a daughter while they are traveling together.

Joel Miller, portrayed by Pedro Pascal in the HBO series, is one of the key protagonists, and before the world changed, he lived in Texas with his daughter Sarah. Sarah died when the virus first began.

This loss had a profound impact on Joel. Over the next 20 years in The Last of Us, he grew frigid and concentrated solely on survival. He worked as a smuggler and did whatever he needed to do to survive.

However, when he met Ellie, he gradually began to feel again and defend her as if she were his own child. Even though Joel became close to Ellie, he was still full of pain. He never truly healed after losing Sarah. Actor Gabriel Luna, who plays Joel’s brother Tommy, said in an interview with Decider,

“He’s longed for her for 20-something years, 25 years. He’s lived in pain and regret and guilt, but now he doesn’t have to live with any of that anymore. He can just be with his daughter.”

Even if Joel didn't always express it, this demonstrates how much he struggled on the inside. Joel's tale is one of survival, love, and loss. His story demonstrates how severely people can be wounded, but it also demonstrates how, even in the most dire circumstances, hope can be restored.
