The Lowdown Season 1 recap

Sterlin Harjo's The Lowdown puts Ethan Hawke in the messy shoes of Lee Raybon, who is a rural Oklahoma citizen journalist and used book dealer. Lee’s truth-seeking not only leads him to trouble, but also takes along his family and friends amidst the conflict.
Along with Hawke, there are Jeanne Tripplehorn, Kyle MacLachlan, Tim Blake Nelson, and Keith David. The series combines crime, mystery, and dark comedy, all while examining power, racism, and the corruption of a small town more closely.
Episodes 1-3: The story of Lee starts with the death of Dale Washberg, who was a famous local, and the whole situation had the stinks of foul play. Lee is convinced there was a cover-up, which prompts him to begin an investigation and accidentally uncover the huge pile of secrets, which includes everything from the corrupt Washberg family to the officials in law and ex-cons with a dangerous background.
Episode 4: Things take a surprising turn. One of the key players, Allen Murphy, gets murdered, but it turns out he is only a distraction. The actual villain is still out there, and Lee understands that he is in deep trouble.
Episodes 5-6: Lee’s digging gets hazardous, and he drags his daughter, Francis, into the mess. Out of the blue, he finds himself dealing with cops, skinheads, and competitor detectives, and the situation starts to deteriorate rapidly.
Episode 7: The dramatic church standoff brings everything to a climax. Lee has nothing left to lose, so he pushes to stop a wave of white supremacist violence and blow the lid off the whole conspiracy. The showdown nearly costs him his life.
The Lowdown doesn’t pull punches. The story is well constructed, the motifs are race, loyalty, and the price of truth that different characters pay. Ethan Hawke nails it as Lee, and Harjo’s direction gives the whole thing a gritty, lived-in feel.
Viewers are on edge for Episode 8. People want answers, and they want closure. Whether the finale ties everything up or leaves more questions, The Lowdown has already made its mark as one of FX’s best dramas this year.
