FX is gearing up for its upcoming noir series titled The Lowdown, and the recent updates have revealed a September 2025 premiere for the Ethan Hawke starrer. Sterlin Harjo (known for his work in Reservation Dogs) is at the helm of the project alongside FX Productions, Crazy Eagle Media in association with Garrett Basch Productions.
With the premise set in Tulsa, the story revolves around a journalist (played by Ethan Hawke) and how his righteous path in life always (ironically) invites unprecedented trouble. The Lowdown was officially announced back in early 2024 and Hawke came on board the project as the lead star as well as an executive producer while Sterlin Harjo takes up the director's chair.
When will The Lowdown be released? Streaming details explored
The Lowdown will be initially released on Fox on September 23, 2025 (Tuesday) and viewers will get to watch the first two pilot episodes (out of total 8) together. So, tune in to the stream sharp at 9 pm ET/PT for an exclusive premiere experience. However, users can also access the digital streaming through Hulu, and the remaining 6 episodes will air every Tuesday at the same time from the following week. So far, there is no teaser/trailer for The Lowdown though fans eagerly await one.
More about The Lowdown
Academy Award nominated-star Ethan Hawke will lead the cast of The Lowdown playing the role of a journalist (though a self-proclaimed one) named Lee Raybon from Tulsa who has this strange obsession with seeking the truth. Although his intentions are pure, his modus operandi of investigation always makes things go awry.
Despite all the trouble, his one aim is to uncover corruption in the society and drag any sort of crime into the room of justice. But Lee's unconventional methods not only put his life in danger but also increases the rift between his family and him.
Ethan Hawke will be joined by co-stars Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Kaniehtiio Horn, who will reportedly portray Lee Raybon's daughter, Francis, and ex-partner, Samantha, respectively. As life goes on with the ups and downs, Raybon (out of the blue) finds himself stuck in the aftermath of a mysterious suicide that took place just a while after he reports on a crucial case and reveals harrowing details.
It is from here that the plot culminates as our Tulsa hero struggles to find a way out and probably tries to solve the biggest case of his so-called journalism career — perhaps the much-awaited breakthrough. Here is a list of all the other cast members of The Lowdown:
- Keith David as Marty
- Tim Blake Nelson as Dale Washberg
- Kyle MacLachlan as Donald Washberg
- Jeanne Tripplehorn as Betty Jo
- Siena East
- Killer Mike
- Michael Hitchcock
- Scott Shepherd
- Cody Lightning
- Tracy Letts
Director Sterlin Harjo has previously worked on multiple films as writer/director — namely, This May Be the Last Time (2014), Four Sheets to the Wind (2007), Rez Ball (2024), Barking Water (2009) and Mekko (2015). On the other hand, lead star Ethan Hawke is well-known for his contributions to the Before trilogy (1995-2013), Gattaca (1997), The Northman (2022) and Moon Knight (2022).
