Miss Governor is soon returning with the remaining episodes of its first season. The Tyler Perry sitcom, which was earlier titled She the People, stars Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, who is appointed as Mississippi’s first Black lieutenant governor.
However, she soon realizes that the job is tougher than she thought, as she has to deal with a governor who does not believe in her. Meanwhile, her family struggles with being in the public eye, which only increases her troubles.
The first part, comprising eight episodes, came out in May this year, while the second part is being released on August 14, 2025. So let’s have a walk down memory lane and find out what happened in Miss Governor Season 1 Part 1.
Miss Governor Season 1 Part 1 recap: Antoinette’s historic victory
Antoinette’s journey in Miss Governor begins on live television as she confidently talks about why she is running for lieutenant governor of Mississippi. She says running against the long-time governor, Irwin Harper, would not work, so she is going for a role where she can still help her community, especially Black residents.
The interview is going well until her mom walks into the shot while being drunk and ruins the moment. Meanwhile, at home, her ex-husband, Cyrus, tries to be the ‘cool dad’ to their teens, Titus and Lola, but often makes poor decisions. Due to one such bad choice, Lola gets to hang out with her irresponsible boyfriend and goes to a wild college party.
A video of Lola dancing goes viral, and Antoinette steps in to protect her daughter. She punches her boyfriend and breaks his nose. That moment is also caught on video. Antoinette worries it will hurt her campaign, but the public instead starts seeing her as a real and authentic person. To her surprise, she wins the election and becomes the first Black woman to serve as lieutenant governor in Mississippi.
Miss Governor Season 1 Part 1 recap: Political sabotage and a health crisis
After her win, Antoinette realizes that Governor Harper never planned to give her real power. He assigns her a full staff without asking for her input, allowing her to bring in only her cousin, Shanika. Instead of meaningful work, Harper sends her on tasks meant to humiliate or distract her, like judging a pig-calling contest or attending an orchard opening that hides a shady land deal.
The pattern soon becomes clear. Harper is using Antoinette as a shield for unpopular projects. When plans for an oil pipeline angered mostly Black neighborhoods that would be forced out, he made her the public face of the deal, hoping to turn her supporters against her. Antoinette’s role shifts from helping the state to protecting Harper from public anger.
Her personal life does not make things easier, as Lola thinks she is too controlling, especially after learning her mother was a free-spirited teen. Meanwhile, Antoinette also feels an attraction to her head of security, Michael, a relationship she knows could be risky for her career.
The pipeline fight becomes a turning point in Miss Governor Season 1 Part 1. Antoinette discovers that it would destroy a historic church, so she works with her friends to delay the project and speaks out against it at a press conference. Harper, furious over her defiance, has a heated confrontation with her, only to collapse from a suspected heart attack moments later.
His absence could make Antoinette acting governor, which would finally give her the power to stop the pipeline. However, Harper’s allies still want the project, and if he recovers, Antoinette will face even stronger opposition in Miss Governor Season 1 Part 2.
Miss Governor Season 1 Part 2 will premiere on Netflix on August 14, 2025.
