The Office, one of the most popular American mockumentary sitcoms followed the daily life of office workers at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton, Pennsylvania division.
The show’s unique cast includes Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, and Jenna Fischer and it gained critical acclaim, particularly for Carell's portrayal, and won numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe and five Primetime Emmys.
John Krasinski, widely known for his role as Jim Halpert on The Office revealed that his favourite episode is Diversity Day. Krasinski liked how it emphasized the show's particular voice despite its outrageous humor. However this episode was the most controversial because of the uncomfortable jokes and stereotypes being used by the characters which were actually a way to mock the corporate diversity policies in America.
More about The Office star John Krasinski
It was from 2005 until 2013 that the The Office aired on NBC and it mainly covered the daily lives of Dunder Mifflin employees in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The famous American sitcom is based on Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's UK sitcom. The 2013 season finale of the show was well-received, with high viewership and great reviews and this was despite the fact that the quality dropped after Carell's departure.
In the episode, Diversity Day, Michael (played by Carell) instructs each employee to wear index cards with racial or cultural identities and this mainly leads to awkward and uncomfortable situations and things quickly get out of hand. The episode's daring and occasionally irreverent humor, which was intended to parody the frequently awkward attitude to diversity in the workplace caused controversy among the fans.
While some fans thought The Office was pushing boundaries and doing something that no other sitcom had ever done through this episode. Some other fans, however, thought that the show went too far this time. Reportedly, this episode was also removed from streaming platforms or syndication packages.
John Krasinski, however, has a particular place in his heart for this episode, in spite of the controversies. He claimed in an interview with 92Y Talk in 2018 that he realized The Office was developing its own distinct humorous voice during this episode.
Krasinski's career, however, extends far beyond The Office and after the show ended, he appeared in films such as Leatherheads (2008), Away We Go (2009), and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016). The famous actor also made his directorial debut with the hit horror film, A Quiet Place (2018), in which he also starred and the film's success prompted 2 sequels, A Quiet Place Part II (2020) and A Quiet Place: Day One (2024).
